I will be traveling to the south of France next month and am undecided as to where to stay in Provence. Since I will be in the area for a few days and will depend on public transportation/budget hotels, I'm wondering as to where to stay. I would love to be in Aix but Avignon/Arles seems to be a more logical with trains. It would also be great to take a bus to some of the little hill towns. What do people think? Thank again.

I recently returned from a weekend in Aix, and although I found it relaxing, there wasn't a lot to do in my opinion. Of course there is the great antique/produce markets on the weekend, but besides that ... it's pretty with the 100+ fountains all over the city, but it just wasn't what I expected.

I like Aix, but if you want better public transportation, I think Avignon is clearly the place to be.

When I was alone in Provence(I am a non driver) I used the train to other destinations when the Lieutaud excursion autobus* didn't show. These *take you to three places on a day trip and a fun place to meet people. I posted the schedule long ago on another thread.

quebec - bus fares were approximately between 4 and 6 euros each way. Train fares were approximately 7 euros each way. Discounts were available for trains for 2 people traveling together round-trip (Decouverte a deux fares)
