I visited the Chandon winery in Napa valley and had a lovely dinner in their restaurant. They all pronounced it Mow ett and 'splained the reason why.

Lawchick, don't forget that Americans don't have the short closed 'O' in their phonetic repetoire. So your average yank, is going to come out with something like "Maw-ett.

The short "o" and the "e" are elided so it's closer to "Mwet" pure and simple because that is how it is pronounced and what is sounds like.

Like couette=kwet

I don't think you would take kindly to the French telling you that Smith was pronounce Smeess.
