Your daughter is right about Mont St Michel... it's a long way from Clermont Ferrand and it will be absolutely packed with tourists in late July early August!

Oddly enough... you will get the best deals on Paris hotels in August so that's a plus.

As to where to go for a couple of days before Paris... the chateaux of the Loire are on your way from C-F and Paris and an easy drive away... the Dordogne is not far to the south west.
If you only have 3 days... go to the Loire.

Thanks again to everyone who has responded. Your advice & firsthand experience will help me make a good decision.

ParisAmsterdam,I'm waiting to hear back from my daughter because before I read your response, I had already asked her to find out from her boyfriend about the Loire Valley and/or the Dordogne! So, I'm glad to know that my ideas are the same as yours
