We will be in Prague second week of October on business mixed with sight seeing. We have 4 days free afterward. Any siggestions on other cities to see in that time? We need to return to Prague to fly back on the fifthe day.

Dresden, Berlin

My husband and I did a trip a few years back to Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Budapest. I loved each of these cities and this year we're going back to Prague and Vienna in Sept. If I had to choose one other than Prague, it'd be a real toss up between Vienna and Budapest -- both have lovely old world architecture, great museums, sights and food.

If you want a totally different experience
than you'll get in Prague, head for Berlin.

If you want more of an "old world" feel then I would pick Budapest or Vienna and even Dresden despite the fact that the latter was basically destroyed during WWII and rebuilt.

It would really be helpful if you would tell us some of your interests as all of the cities thus far mentioned offer a veriety of different possibilities and experiences.

And then there's the transportation issue. Are you willing to fly? Are you planning to travel by rail or by car? Some of these places are easier to get to than others depending on the mode of transport chosen.

Go to Krakow!!! We loved it there. It is sooo similar to Prague, but smalled and less people. You can take a train between the cities, but we flew on LOT Polish Airlines and had to stop over in Warsaw. Good luck deciding!

Cesky Krumlov or Karlovy Vary. I would hesitate to travel too far, w/only 4 days available.

I agree with that -- I'd take the opportunity to see more of the Czech Republic. It would be a perfect opportunity for that -- Moravia, Cesky Krumlov, etc.

Second maybe Vienna as I think it's only five hours or so by train. I would not recommend Krakow as it's too far if you only have four free days. By train, you'll take up about a day each way getting to and from it. I just think that's a bad use of short vacation time.

I wouldn't go to Dresden myself as I don't care for it that much. I wouldn't want to spend almost four days there, anyway, given the alternatives.

Budapest or Vienna

I would suggest you to spend one full day in Jewish quarter, take one-day trips to Ceski Krumlov and Karlovy Vary and ½ day trips to Karlstejn and Terezin.

In answer to some of your questions--I have been to Krakow and Poland and Vienna and the Wiesbaden area of Germany.
We are willing to travel by train and/or car, but we will have had our fill of airplanes by then.

Is it possible to get to Linz in a reasonable time? I was born there, but have never seen the place.

Another vote for Cesky Krumlov and Dresden. We visited both last month, with Prague in the middle. I agree with SanParis - with only 4 days I wouldn't go too far. We spent a day in Dresden and a day in CK. We easily could've expanded that to 3 or 4 days but schedule on this trip didn't permit. Both places were fascinating and very different than Prague.

I am a big fan of CK & we actually extended our stay there last & shortened our Vienna stay. I highly encourage it.

we did the Vienna, Prague, Berlin trip 2 years ago and had a great trip. With four days though, I would do a day or overnight trip to Cesky Krumlov south of Prague. We loved this place and it was very relaxing. There are numerous day trips from Prague such as Terezin concentration camp (which we did not go to(but I wish we had) as we had been to concentration camps but I would highly recommend it if you haven't and some of the artwork of the children sent to Terezin is in one of the Jewish synagogues in the Jewish Quarter) Karlovy Vary, Kutna Hora, and several castles.

If you will be traveling by train round-trip from Prague, you might want to investigate if the Prague Pass is still available. We used it two years ago, and it offered a low fare to encourage travel into and out of Prague. Not sure if it's still offered, but BudgetEuropeTravel.com would know all about it. It's a bit tricky to purchase, so I recommend you call them. Because it covers travel within the Czech Republic, but you have to purchase tickets from border towns into other countries.
