PRAGUE - IS THERE ENOUGH TO DO FOR A FULL WEEK?
We are planning on staying a week in Prague & a week in Krakow. When we travel now we rent an aprtment for a week in each city. We believe this is the best way to truly appreciate a city. I have been reading up on Prague & most people seem to thing 3-4 days is enough. Is this true? I would think there would be plenty to do in a full 7 days. We enjoy everything from history & museums to walking or even renting bikes to explore the city. Can anybody help? Thank you.

I think it would be great. You can take a couple of day trips to Kutna Hora, Pilzn, or Cesky Krumlov if you find that there's not enough for you in Prague. But if you love walking around admiring the beautiful building facades you'll never get bored.
You'll also find lots to see and do in Krakow. I'm heading there shortly for my second time. I'll have 5 days and my itinerary is full.

I've been there 3 times and certainly more than a week in total, and plan to go again. Also, there are a lot of good day trips.
I think it really depends on you and what you want to do. What I find to do would not be of interest to you, I'll bet.
If you like to do everything, then any city could be fine for a week, I would think, if that even includes just walking around or riding bikes. Just read guidebooks and decide for yourself, they list the main attractions, tourist and cultural, as well as possible day trips. A lot of people need to be spoonfed their tourism and can't think of anything to do on their own and partly it's because they have no real interests IMO. They need to be told what a tourist should do and where to go.

I think a week would be great. We had 4 days and it wasn't enough. We didn't see everything we wanted to see in the city itself and we didn't do any of the day trips that we had been thinking about.
Before we went though, a couple friends of ours recommended not even spending the 4 days because they said their wasn't really enough to justify that much time. I think they must have gone to a different Prague than we did.

I spent 10 nights in Prague, and in retrospect I wish I had cut the time in half and spent the other five nights in Budapest. Prague is lovely, but I was not as enamored of it as many travelers are. To each his own.
I do think, however, that you can certainly find enough to do for a week. I never ran out of things to do during my week-and-a-half there. A week will allow you to see things in depth, and allow for time to just wander and explore. As others have mentioned, you can also take day trips. Cesky Krumlov, Terezin, Kutna Hora, Karlovy Vary, Krivoklat Castle, Bratislava, and Karlstejn Castle are some of the possibilities.
If you enjoy staying a week in cities, I wouldn't change plans. Even if Prague is not what you expected, you can still find plenty of things to do and have a memorable trip.

I think your plan of renting an apartment will give you a slice of neighborhood life that's a bit harder to get in a hotel, and you will easily find a week's worth of activities, even without the side trips, although those are good options. We spent four days in Prague this summer and easily could have spent more. You didn't mention whether you enjoyed concerts, but if you do, you can sample all sorts of music, particularly during the summer tourist season. There are performances in many locations (especially churches) every night during the summer. These are not big name performers, but the music is good, the tickets are inexpensive, and the locations are often stunning.

I recommend going to the Vysehrad section of Prague, which I think is a little off the beaten track. It's quieter than Old Town Square & the castle area. It's up on a hill overlooking the Vltava River. There is a lovely chuch, Sts Peter & Paul, and the gorgeous national cemetery. There are fortress ruins & great views of the city & a little cafe where you can stop for a drink.
We have been to Prague twice, each time for 4 days, & I know that we have not seen everything. You can click on my name to read my trip report from August 2009, if that will help for ideas.
When are you going? I hope you write a trip report.
We were in Krakow, too, in 2003, for about 3 - 4 days & loved it. I know there are day trips which we didn't have time for, so you will have plenty to do in Krakow, as well. It's a lovely city.

lots and lot to do.i go for a week every May but thats for the beer festival and usually fit in a few tourist things as well as day trips elsewhere.A week gives you plenty time to see the city at a relaxed pace.Vysehrad as mentioned is a lovely place and i enjoy Letna park,Zizkov Hill has recently become a favourite place of mine, the monument to the unknown soldier is here as well as a fantastic cultural museum, the view from up here are pretty good too.
Bikes arr fimne for exloring away from the main tourist areas the main areas are pedestrianised so a bike is not much fgood,Prague is pretty hilly. The Public transport system is second to none ,very cheap and very efficient and is a great way of seeing places away from the main sites. I am back in Prague in 4 weeks time to check out a few micro breweries, yeah i know not the normal tourist stuff but i like it.

I agree with Unclegus, biking in Prague is not a great idea. Many of the nice parts are pedestrianised, and much of the rest has cobblestones - and trams that leap out on you when you're not expecting them. The autumn colours will be with us soon so a trip out of town could be stunning. One of my favourite (and not too touristy) trips, is to Krivoklat castle.

We took a bike tour with Praha Bike out along the river and through some parks. That was really fun and we saw some things we wouldn't have seen otherwise. But the portion of the tour where we rode through town was challenging. I was really glad that we didn't do a city bike tour because with all the cobblestones, as it was, I thought my fillings were going to shake right out of my teeth. Our bikes had good suspension, but still - it was tough riding. We've ridden bikes in Munich, Amsterdam, and Bruges, but Prague was esspecially challenging.
