and if you go out behind the palace, up the hill a bit and follow the tram line uphill you come in a short walk to the Russian Colony where Russian royals built pseudo rural Russian dachas - quite interesting architecture and weird for this area. And nearby the Belvedere is a an old viewing platform with vistas all over the Wannsee area.

I may be in the minority here, but I do not necessarily find Potsdam worthwhile in November.
Indeed Sanssouci is the main attraction there along with the Neues Palais (New Palace, I don't know why it always is being referred to around here in what looks like a Dutch spelling as "Nieuw Palace"
. But personally I believe it is the huge park that makes the trip attractive and spectacular.
The palaces more or less are the omni-present home decor show prevalent in most other palaces, too.
The park will not be that spectacular in November - and much less so on a grey and rainy day.
On the positive side, Potsdam has a nice inner city section so you might take some enjoyment out of the excursion after all - but if your time in Berlin is sparse, I think I'd rather spend the day in the city.

HSV..thank you so much for graciously making the spelling correction.
I personally think Potsdam is well worth a trip at any time of the year IF you are mainly interested in what is inside those two palaces. I certainly wouldn;t skip it just because the gardens aren't at their best but to each their own.

ditto to Dukey - yeh if you're going back to Berlin sometime in nicer weather than forego Potsdam if not go for it - and like hsv says the town of Potsdam has a pleasant pedestrian street and several attractions of its own, like the old Dutch (?) stables.

Dukey,
I apologize if I came across as wisecracking.
There is some Dutch culture present in Potsdam, reflected in quite a number of buildings in the old section of town - but these were built on purpose to attract Dutch craftsmen back then. I do not know if the Neues Palais falls in line with that, but I doubt it.
I have repeatedly seen the Neues Palais being referred to here in that Dutch looking spelling and have always pondered on why that was - I guess tonight was just the time to speak out about it - and it happened to be you to be affected. No harm intended, though.

It appears that the New Palace, Cecilienhof Palace, and Picture Galley are open in November, though the first only on weekends, but the new chambers and Schloss Charlottenhof are not. Tours to Potsdam from Berlin do not seem to run in November. Given all of this, is it still worth going (on a weekend)?
