Does anyone have any fixed ideas?
I would suggest that we meet up in a pub in the West End (I can suggest many pubs. Many many pubs. Many many many pubs. Many pubs. Many many.) and move onto a restaurant in Chinatown.
I am far from a picky eater but does anyone else have any dietary requirements or preferences.
To be honest I’ll just go with the flow.

David,
I acknowledge your expertise on pubs. Many pubs. Many many pubs.
I would be happy to meet at one and then move on to a restaurant.
I have no particular dietary requirements, other than veering away from greasy spoons.
I,too, will go with the flow..where ever the flow decides to flow.

Yauatcha not cheap.
So, from my point of view, somewhere else would be better.
I'd recommend Gerrard's Corner in China Town for regular, standard but fresh and tasty chinese food. Same fare as most places but decent ingredients (not gristly cuts).
What do you think, folks?

If Chinese is the chosen choice (it’s cheap and sociable) then we don’t have to worry too much about booking long in advance. There’s no shortage of good chinese places in Chinatown (which is expanding quite a long way from Gerrard St these days).
So does anyone have any great objection to chinese? If not does anyone have a recommendation?
At a purely practical level I am in the Soho area at least once a week and can check out any locations etc.
As for the pub beforehand do you want Soho seedy? Boho chic? Quiet and out of the way? No smoking? Full of Nathan Barleys? Lap dancers? Transvestites? All human life is there…….

I'm surprised I've not seen this thread before but now that I have, please can I be added to the "maybe" list for the time being.
Sorry that I can't be more specific but (although I live in London and spend nearly all my time here), work may take me away at short-ish notice.
I think the idea to meet in a pub and go for dinner near Chinatown somewhere is a good one. Having said that, I'm happy to go with whatever is decided by everyone else.

David, agree that advance bookings aren't usually neccessary in China Town though can be a good idea for larger groups... even then just a few days in advance would be plenty.
Do check out Gerrard's Corner and see what you think. It's my default because I really like their dim sum - have tried a number of others but come back to them - though that's not on after 5.30 or 6.00 anyways.
Pub requirements for me = somewhere I can definitely get a seat - I have a dodgy hip and can't stand comfortably for long periods. Not worried about it being non-smoking but it would be nice if it were not so smokey as to be eye-watering! Also, nearer the restau the better = less walking.
Any ideas?

Given that what people seem to be interested in is somewhere that won’t be too crowded (to get a seat) and not too smoky can I suggest the Polar Bear in Lisle St?
It’s a no-smoking pub (the only one I know), and because of that doesn’t get massively crowded. It also has the advantage of about the cheapest bar prices around. There’s not much more to recommend it – it’s just a pub, but it’s OK, not noisy, not full of Nathan Barleys, not seedy.
It also has the advantage of being in Chinatown.
Failing that; there is the Lyric just of Ham Yard in Soho, a short walk from Chinatown. That’s an old fashioned small pub popular with old men like me.
Alternatively we could try to fit in with the crowd in the Intrepid Fox (where I used to drink cider and black when I was about 15 with a very unfortunate haircut).
I’m in Soho tonight and I’ll see if I can get hold of a menu from Gerrards Corner. Anywhere else people want me to try and get hold of menus from?

I'll be on my way to Brussels on Oct 10 and may not have access to Fodors between then and Oct 25.
So...is it time to make an executive decision and say "let's meet at the Polar Bear first" and then go on to whichever Chinese restaurant the London Fodorites agree on and book for us?
Is 6 P.M. a good time to gather at the pub? Earlier? Later? Any time is fine with me.
Would a London Fodorite kindly post directions to the Polar Bear? Is it near the Waldour end of Lisle Street ?
I will be walking there from Bloomsbury Street, but I suppose the Leicester Square Tube is the one others would want, yes?
Kavey, David, Kate...are you out there? The rest of us ask for guidance.

Polar Bear at 6 sounds great and, if the others agree, we can book a table for maybe 7pm, at Gerrard's Corner.
The pub is kind of on Little Newport Street - as you head to China Town/ Gerrard Street from Leicester Square tube station you turn up Little Newport which is just off Charing Cross road itself, it has a cashpoint on the corner... and the pub is about 50 yards along it, just north of Leicester Sq itself.

Going to the pub at six o’clock is hardly the greatest inconvenience known to mankind.
In terms of finding the Polar Bear – it’s quite hard to miss! From Leicester Square, find the Prince Charles cinema (which is on the side with the Swiss centre on it). The Prince Charles backs onto Lisle st, and the Polar Bear is at the end of the road on the left (In any case Lisle St is a short street)

Directions to the Polar Bear now firmly embedded in my head...and written in a notebook.
See everyone there at 6 on Oct. 25... You'll know me by my funny accent. ( Well, Kavey will recognize me. )
