Positano

My wife and I will be on a cruise stopping in Naples in early Dec. She'd like to spend a few hours in Positano. Any suggestions about getting there (and back to the ship) would be appreciated.
Could I hire a taxi to take us around for a few hours? Would it be reliable? Some friends have warned that Naples can be dicey and I should stick with Princess tours. Thanks

If you can splurge, I would hire a private driver. Public transportation would be the local train to Sorrento, then the bus (train doesn't go to Positano). It takes a while to get from Naples to Positano that way, and I think you are better off with a driver. I would do some research though, I don't know how much is open in Positano that time of year.

Hi J,

December is way, way off season for Positano. You could have wind, rain and fog - or not.

Oh, pish tosh.

See the Naples part of my trip report for tips on how to fill your day in Naples.

Hi Jes - The following drivers have all been recommended here:

- Positano-based

www.positanocarservice.com
www.flaviogioia.com
www.limocarservice.net
www.benvenutolimos.com (Praiano)

- Sorrento-based

www.tourofitaly.com
www.francescomarrapese.com
www.cuomonet.it
www.seesorrento.com
www.sorrento.it

A full-day tour will cost you close to € 300.

Alternatively you could book a transfer to Positano (- approx. € 100) - and return by public transport.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

What's a good way to arrange for a private driver/tour? I'm reluctant to provide a "deposit" and then hope the driver will appear at the port. Will a driver just accept an "electronic email handshake" (and also hope that I'll show up)?

jesO2,

We've always made an e-mail arrangement-no deposit necessary. If it helps, we'e used Tourofitaly based in Sorrento many times, and would highly recommend Giovanni or Giancarlo!

HI J,

>Will a driver just accept an "electronic email handshake" (and also hope that I'll show up)?<

That's what we did when we arranged for Limousine Service Sorrento (Renato Cuomo)
