Positano
 

My wife and I will be on a cruise stopping in Naples in early Dec. She'd like to spend a few hours in Positano. Any suggestions about getting there (and back to the ship) would be appreciated.
Could I hire a taxi to take us around for a few hours? Would it be reliable? Some friends have warned that Naples can be dicey and I should stick with Princess tours. Thanks

If you can splurge, I would hire a private driver. Public transportation would be the local train to Sorrento, then the bus (train doesn't go to Positano). It takes a while to get from Naples to Positano that way, and I think you are better off with a driver. I would do some research though, I don't know how much is open in Positano that time of year.

December is way, way off season for Positano. You could have wind, rain and fog - or not.

What's a good way to arrange for a private driver/tour? I'm reluctant to provide a "deposit" and then hope the driver will appear at the port. Will a driver just accept an "electronic email handshake" (and also hope that I'll show up)?

We've always made an e-mail arrangement-no deposit necessary. If it helps, we'e used Tourofitaly based in Sorrento many times, and would highly recommend Giovanni or Giancarlo!
