Sam,
are you talking about Poseidon at Positano and Santa Caterina at Amalfi ?
Oh, no doubt: Santa Caterina: very charming, very elegant. The best.

These two hotels are not in the same league. The Santa Caterina is a luxury hotel and the Poseidon is just a very nice hotel. The website for the SC is amazing (if you have the flash plug-in). Give it a try: www.hotelsantacaterina.it.

Although the Santa Caterina is GORGEOUS, it really depends on where you want to be, and whether being able to walk to places is important to you. In my mind, the Santa Caterina, which is just outside Amalfi, offers a beautiful hotel in a somewhat isolated location unless you have a car. Poseidon is at the top of Positano, definitely not in the same league as Santa Caterina, but is walkable to all the shops, restaurants, and beach area in town. If you're carless, I would pick this hotel because it is within walking distance to so many things. The hotel itself offers very nice rooms with amazing views overlooking Positano. It's a good uphill walk from town, but we actually enjoyed it because once we got to the hotel, we felt removed from the crowds in town and at the beach. It also helped that the food was exceptionally good. Best of luck with your decision!
