The Santa Caterina is my favourite hotel on the Amalfi Cost, It is in a spectacular setting on a cliff over the sea and set amidst lemon and orange groves. The pool is on the rocks below and right next to the Med and you can dive into the sea from the pool area. Incredible staff and breathtaking views. Great food. You can walk to Amalfi (downhill) in about 10-15 minutes and the hotel has a shuttle that runs hourly. You can take a ferry from Amalfi to Positano and Capri.

As for the Il Saraceno, I was not familiar with it, so I looked at the web and found two in the Amalfi area (there is also a Cova de Saraceni in Positano). One is in Conca Dei Marini, which is a charming little cliff town with very nice views along the coast. The other appears to be right in Amalfi on Via Augustariccio. Although both say they are 5 star, I don?t think either is in the same class as the Santa Caterina or the other 5 stars in Amalfi like the Sirenuse in Positano or the Palazzo Sasso in Ravello. Also, neither hotel is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World or Small Luxury Hotels, which is usually an indicator of quality for hotels that are not part of a luxury chain like the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton. The Santa Caterina is a member of the Leading Hotels. The one in Conca dei Marini is listed on the Fodor's hotel guide on this site (Click on Hotels, scroll down to Italy, choose Amafi Coast & Capri) and got a 3.7, based on two reviews The Santa Caterina got a 4.5, based on about 20 reviews.

thank you all for the info.
we stayed at Covo dei Saraceni hotel in Positano about 4 years ago. It is a 4*
hotel and has the best location there. The ferries to Capri, Ischia ,Sorrento stop right next to the hotel.
i e-mailed Santa Caterina ,but no reply yet.
We are planning to go in july and it may be booked, so am looking for the next option in same area.
thank you again.

Stayed at the Santa Caterina and would agree with all the above postings. Best location, service, view, I have ever come accross. If they are booked, take a look at San Pietro. that also looked very nice.
