Palazzo Sasso-Ravello,Italy--planning trip in Aug. '02

I posted a question regarding the Pallazo Sasso earlier today but it was deleted...trying again! We are planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast. We are confirmed at the Splendido in Portofino (farther North, I realize). f we have to choose between the two, which is preferable?

Although I didn't stay at the Sasso it is a wonderful new sleek looking hotel nestled up in the hills of Ravello.<BR>I preferred Ralvelo to stay because it is quieter and there are lovely gardens and it feels more removed (although Amalfi is right below) Be careful if you are driving, the roads are very narrow and with the tour buses, it can be quite a challenge!

This is an impossible question to answer, because it depends upon personal tastes and preferences. Both hotels and towns are superb.

Hotel Splendido in Portofino is listed in the leading hotels of the world 2002. Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi is also listed.

The hotel aside, pick the location. Portofino is isolated and gets boring after a day. There are better choices on the Ligurian coast. However, I would pick the Amalfi coast where you have a dozen good choices---the Palazzo Sasso is one of them if you want to be on the top of the hill above the coast. I would prefer being in Positano.
