Portofino

Rod, my wife and I remember Portofino as probably the most picturesque town in Italy, if not Europe. There's really only two things to do in this town which is so tiny that there is only one road in to it, one parking lot in it, and one cop that lets a car in to the town only when another leaves.
First, enjoy the little outdoor, canopied cafes along the harbor. Try the calamari. Second, tour the whole town and take plenty of photos.
Ditto on the Splendido hotel! This hotel always on the top hotle lists for Europe. Great place to relax and see the view. We were also there on a cruise. We had time to take the bus, $1.00, to the next town up the coast, Santa Margarita, and explore there some. Do Portofino first though, and if you have time do the bus trip.

kiki, normaly i like to stay no more than two nights anywhere, we like to keep moving. but we wanted out of the hustle of rome and got to portofino early. four days in heaven. this a VERY high end place, but who knows if were ever going to get back there? at this hotel we never saw a bill for anything until checkout, they just know who you are. i've been in the restaurant business 30 years and have never seen anything like this place. though portofino is small, santa margarita(sp) is just down the road 10 minutes. lots of hiking all around the hills near the hotel. the place really reminded me of a james bond movie. at LEAST have lunch on the patio weather permitting.

We walked up to Castello Brown where the movie "Enchanted April" was filmed. They were having some kind of photography show and there were shots of the rich and famous who visited Portofino, Churchill, Jackie O, Liz Taylor, etc. It was lots of fun.
