It's the very heart of Florence. And as taxis aren't easy to get hold of, a convenient location is REALLY useful in Florence. You have easy walking access to all the main areas, including Oltrarno over the river if you want to escape the crowds and find a less touristy restaurant.
In all my visits, only once have I satyed in this area and I loved the convenience. Crowds/noise don't bother me, being a London resident. I say go for it.
I'd be interested to know which hotel you're considering?

Hi Daisy,
We stayed right by the Ponte Vecchio (at the Hermitage) and thought it was a great place to stay. Easy to walk to everything and enjoyed being able to photograph the Arno and the bridge from different times of day.
