I don't doubt what you read; but, having just been there in January I can tell you that on an ordinary day if you do not get there by 3 you will NOT be allowed in. Begging does not help.

Hi Marbie - I was interested in this too and found this on http://www.arethusa.net. The website is in Italian but I put it through freetranslation.com. It is under
"Scavi Archeologici di Pompei - Suggestioni al Foro"

"They are distributed 5 April the nocturnal route to the Excavations of Pompei. The initiative of the archeological Supervision of Pompei the Region was finance by Campania, Councillorship to the Cultural Assets, realized from the society I Know. l. and. of the group Enel and thought out and treated from the society "Otium Negotium" of Rome.
The route, with texts recited in Italian, in English and on request in Japanese, of the duration of about a hour, will lead groups of 80 visitors from the suburban Baths to the Hole. Long the route a story will reveal the most evocative places of the nocturnal Pompei across sounds and shouting spread between the domus and the templi and with the magical background of the music of the teacher Ennio Morricone.
The itinerary named "Suggestions to the Hole" it is concluded with a multimedia show that rebuilds the dramatic phases of the eruption with special effects and film images.
The route will be developed all the evenings except for the monday, from Door Navy, until november 2 2003, in three shifts of visit in the following schedules:
H 21.30, h 22,20 and h 23.10 (the entrance to the h 23.10 is available alone of Saturday until may 24 and all of the days except for monday from may 25) (for the month of May to 21.30, alone the Tuesday, Thursday and the Saturday, the route is in English) The Navy Door of ticket offices will be open 45 minute before the beginning of the first show. The cards reserved should be withdrawn with
20 minutes of anticipation. The cost of the cards is of 24,00 Euro to person (21,00 Euro for the possessors of Artecard)
For the minor of 18 years, deputy part of a same familiar unit, the entrance is free.
Reservations: on this page
For information: 899111178 (from the Tuesday to the sunday from the hours 11.00 - 18.00) e-mail: [email protected]
NB: the reservation is advisable alone for the greater of years 12"

on the website you can enter what date you are interested in and it shows what times are available. Hope this helps!

I think this is a seasonal thing, which is why kslanker sounded a little doubtful. Susjc's auto translation is a little rough, so it's hard to figure out the details.

When we were there in October last, we saw mention of Pompeii at night in a tourist flyer. I also think it sounds interesting. What I don't know is whether you're able to wander throughout the excavation or are limited to one area. The auto translation sounds like the tour is limited. Also, walking on the uneven stone surfaces in semi-darkness could be dangerous.

Either way, you'd definitely want to go back and see the place in the daytime. It is more amazing that you can imagine.

I have been on the this tour! It was great but trying to get registered for it on Arethusa.net was difficult.
CAP is the Italian equilivant to our zip code. You must make reservations on the web to go on this tour!
I spoke with the guide and told him most travelers don't have access to computers as they travel (data ports in Italian hotels are not common). They are trying to help with the ease of getting reservations.
The cost of the tour was about 20 euro. It was worth all the trouble and money spent!
This ia a great multi-media tour as they luminate various public areas of the scavi starting at the Marina Gate. Not all the scavi area is included in this tour. Also, be aware it only offered on certain nights in English so plan accordingly. This tour is also offered during good weather seasons.
If no one has registered they do not give the tour but if someone has and they haven't reached their limit they will allow you to join the tour. Also note that they close the scavi at 5 pm and then re-open the scavi for this tour only. If you are the only one registered for this tour they will give it for you alone or at least they were last summer. Another nearby illuminated tour is of the Caeserta Palace which is a new offering and was another great tour!
