Pompeii in Context
Hello,
I will be travelling to the Amalfi Coast in September and am excited about seeing Pompeii. I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on what order you would prefer to see Pompeii, Vesuvius and the museum in Naples that holds the artifacts that were recovered from Pompeii. I'm thinking that it might be good to see these things in a specific order, to get it all in perspective. Maybe it just doesn't matter. Your thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks!

We planned to see the museum items first but arrived into Naples too late. The next day we toured Pompeii-Amazing place-we spent all day from opening until closing there. Our last day in the region, we took the bus to Vesuvius and walked the rest of the way to the top.
This was a good order for us because we had two nights in Naples and the most important thing for us to see was Pompeii. We don't feel too bad about missing the museum. Climbing Vesuvius shouldn't be missed if you have the chance. It's a steep climb!

We found that seeing Pompeii first and then the museum worked well for us, because we could imagine how the artifacts that we saw in the museum looked in their original setting. Definitely see the museum if you have time, it's well worth it. Next time (and there WILL be one!) we'll do Vesuvius. Pompeii is so fascinating!

Hi ele,
> Would it be possible to take a day trip to Pompeii from Rome?<
Yes. It is a long day, though.
DIY: Train Rome to Naples, train to Pompeii Scavi on Circumvesuviana.

Not directly answering to the questions, but I think that the 2 letters of Plinio, the young, could give you some insight to Pompeii and the Vesuvian subject.

I thought it was really interesting to see Pompeii and Ostia in Antica in the same trip. (Certainly not done on the same day, though.) It was so cool to see the remains of a port city that was also a commerce center (Ostia in Antica) and a residential town with shops (Pompeii) and compare them.
