Pompei Train Stations

If someone could please help me with some information/clarification on the train stations located in Pompei, Italy I would appreciate it.I will be traveling on the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento and I need to catch an FS state Trenitalia train in Pompei.I know there are two train stations in Pompei on the Circumvesuviana line.Is one of these stops located at the FS train station? If not which one is closest and can I walk to the FS train station from there.Thank you for your help.

I don't know what you mean by FS state Trenitalia train, but I can tell you that from Sorrento, the first Pompeii stop is for the town; the second one says "scavi" and that brings you directly to the ruins. From that I would surmise you would want the town stop. Hope this helps a little.

My husband and I have just spent the last 1/2 hour looking at our maps of Pompeii and Campania to try and figure out the train stations. They were of little help. As best as we can remember the train station for the state train line was only a few blocks away from the train station for the Circumvesuviana line, easily walked while pulling a suitcase behind. Both stations were marked "Pompeii".

We had spent some time on the Amalfi Coast and took the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento heading to Naples where we were going to switch trains to the state line to head north. We decided instead to get off at Pompeii and make the train switch there as we were familiar with Pompeii and had heard some sordid tales about the Naples train station (this was in 1997). We were SO GLAD that we had switched trains in Pompeii as we were among a handful of people getting on there, whereas, when we pulled into the Naples train station the platform was crowded and the train filled up to the point where people were standing in the aisles. (Just a little info for anyone making a similar trip.)

Have a wonderful time visiting in Italy. You'll fall in love with the country. Peace.

Robyn

The various railway lines in Pompei are confusing. There are two Circumvesuviana stations, but they are on different lines which divide at Torre Annunziata. The line from Sorrento stops at Pompei Scavi (which, to confuse matters even more, used to be called Villa dei Misteri and may still be shown on old maps under this name); the next stop after Pompei Scavi is Torre Annunziata. The other line from Torre Annunziata goes through Pompei station which is in the town centre near the FS station.
Therefore, if you're travelling from Sorrento, either change at Torre Annunziata to get to Pompei, or alight at Pompei Scavi and look for a bus or taxi to the FS station.

artstuff-
this is the kind of practical. extremely helpful travel tip that is great to discover on this board! Thank you!

GeoffHammer-
Thanks to you too! Can you clarify a little, do you think it's possible to take the Circumsuviana from Sorrento to Torre Annunziata, then switch to the other line for Pompeii to get to Pompeii Centre, rather than taking a taxi from Pompeii Scavi?

For most of the day, trains leave Sorrento at 07 and 37 minutes past the hour, and take 34 minutes to Torre Annunziata. To get from Torre Annunziata to Pompei station, you need to take the train heading for Poggiomarino; outside peak hours, these are hourly at 01 minutes past the hour and take nine minutes to Pompei. You need to allow enough time to walk from the Circumvesuviana station in Pompei to the FS station. Incidentally, the original questioner was right in spelling Pompei as the inhabitants spell it.
