Please help with hotels in Rome

Our family with 9 year old son will be in Rome for 4 nights in April 4-8. I'm looking for centraly located hotel, hopefully in range of $100-$150 per night.
I've send email to Santo Chiaro([email protected]) to find out their rates for this time twice, they didn't respond. Is there any other way of communicating with them, not just by phone?
My travel agent gave me choices of :
1.Domus Mariae
2.Polo
3.Aldobradeschi
4.Modial
And my friend told me about Cicerone. She said good location, hotel is so-so.
Please help me with making this decision.

I had a similar problem contacting a B&B in Rome. No response to three emails. Then I sent a fax. Got a response immediately.

Do you mean the Hotel Mondial or "Modial?"
If the former, I'd certainly recommend it. (4 star) Very comfortable. Located not too far from Pza Repubblica. (It's a Best Western.) Had free computer access in the lobby and a full breakfast.
We got a good rate off the Best Western web site.

I think the domus mariae is off via aurelia. If it is the hotel I am thinkging of it is close to subway stop Corneila but not close to tourist areas.

We never received a response to our email to the Santa Chiara, either.

I was surprised, because so many people have raved about the place. Maybe they don't need the business.

Sorry to hear that you found the Santa Chiara unresponsive, my dealings with them by email were fine.

I'm not sure that a room for a family of 3 at that hotel would fit into your budget, unless they are running a special promotion.

fax number on their website
www.albergosantachiara.com is
39-066 873 144

good luck

Try Pensione Panda. Great location near Piazza Spagna. They have a website. Rooms in the 100 euro range.

We stayed at the Santa Chiara in May of 2002 and were most pleased. Very nice hotel and good breakfast.

We had a double (husband and wife) and paid about 200 per night.

I don't remember if we bookd directly through the hotel (I don't think so) or through Venere (as many on this board have).

Absolutely great location (directly behind the Pantheon.

As Elaine indicated, unless there is a special promotion, you may find it out of your stated budget.

We stayed at the Hotel des Artistes on our way back from travelling in Italy so we could be near the train station. Nice hotel but I wouldn't want to be near there my whole time in Rome. So charmless compared to other places. I recommend the Cesari (I think they're on the Fodors list for their email address) They were I think within your price range, responded quickly to our email request for reservation and also booked us the Borghese Gallery in advance. Their location is simply fabulous near the Pantheon in old Rome. Comfortable and with a helpful staff.

My father and I liked the 3 star Hotel Julia in September. For the two of us it was 150E per night w/breakfast. The address is Via Rasella, 29 and e-mail [email protected] They also have a website- I think it's hoteljulia.it It was a quiet street that is walkable to the Trevi, Spanish Steps, pretty much everywhere.

We stayed at the Santa Chiara last February and loved it. I made all of our arrangements via email and had no issue. We took a family room and it was actually two rooms and a bath. I think you may have an issue as to the price; we paid about $240 a night for that room. I thought that it was a good deal. They actually first quoted me a higher rate, but I asked if they could do better, and they did! It is a wonderful hotel is in a great location.

I've stayed at Cicerone and liked the location. Had no problems there. Room very clean. But, I'm not sure you could get a room under $150 for a family.
