Paris: Seeking Recommendations for Jazz Clubs
Seeking recommendations of the best jazz clubs to spend a few hours at during an upcoming trip to Paris. Names and addresses would be great, along with the best nights to go, an approximate cost of the cover charges and costs of drinks.

Thanks.

unclesam

Check out the Jazz Club Lionel Hampton in the Hotel Le Meridien Etoile. We caught a set - Carl Weathersby & Trudy Lynn (more blues than jazz). Not cheap - 1st drink is 23 - 27 euro (cover charge) but the music was great!

see http://www.jazzclub-paris.com/gb/page_jazz.htm
My favourite jazz venue is the Caveau des Oubliettes, on Rue Galande, in the 5th. They have free-for-all jam sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, from 10pm. Get there early to have a drink in the bar (there's *real* turf on the floor instead of carpets) and check out the guillotine in the corner. Then when they open up the cellar bar, head down and check out the dungeons. Yup, the bar used to be part of the old prison, and you can go and visit the old dungeon cells underground (very spooky!!!). The jam session is also held in the cellar bar - it gets very busy so do get there early enough to get a seat. There are always a couple of resident musicians who start things off, and you never know who's going to turn up, with what instrument!! Great fun, and a very friendly atmosphere. Entry is free, and the bar prices are not inflated.

unclesam,
The best is, to get a copy of Pariscope upon your arrival in Paris. In there, you will find all the concerts listed, incl. exact times and prices.
You can also check the program online (www.pariscope.fr). Pariscope is the weekly Paris what's on (runs from Wed through Tue) and is worth the small expense (0.40 E), because you will also find out about all opening hours and current exhibits, etc. You will find the small English section of Time Out useful as well.

One place would be:

Le Bilboquet
13, rue Saint-Benoit, 6th arr.
Metro: Saint-Germain-des-Pres
Concerts start at 10:00 PM

Philippe Duchemin Trio
Feb 3 till 10

Hildegarde Wanzlawe Quartet
Feb 10 till 16

Georges Arvantas Trio
Feb 17 and 18

I really enjoyed Bibloquet when we were in Paris last year. Keep in mind that the Metro stops around 1 AM I think so plan on taking a cab home unless you are close to walking. I don't remember the cover but don't think it was too much. Drinks varied.

Wendy
