haven't stayed there, but do stay in that area a lot. SO on that point, it is definitely a convenient location in terms of transportation (metro, etc, and it's even near a train station), shopping, cafes, plenty of restaurants, cinema. And you could easily walk to Luxembourg Gardens from there, it's just a bit north (at least the bottom end of them, they are quite large). It's a nice neighborhood.

We stayed there for 3 nights in '07. As Christina indicated, it has good metro & RER connections, and there are several cafes within 1 block where you could get breakfast. Only 1 block from Luxembourg Gardens. Many restaurants too - we liked Josephine "Chez Bumonet" and did not care for La Coupole. Downside is that there is a bar across the street that was very noisy late at night. Perhaps ask for a room away from the front street.
We have made many many trips to Paris - anywhere from 1 night to 3 weeks. On our first trip to Paris in '77 we stayed in the St Germain des Pres area. We stayed in that area again for about our next 5 trips. Then we stayed in the 7th, Marais, & near Champs Elyees. Then we stayed in an apt for 2 weeks in the 15th, another 2 trips for 1 week each in the 15, in an apt for 1 week in the Marais, at the Brea for 3 days, then 3 weeks in an apt in the 7th, & last year 1 week in an apt in the 7th at Christmas. We also frequently take the TGV from elsewhere in France to the Gare de Lyon & stay overnight near the Gare (dine at Train Bleu) before a flight home the next day. I mention this because I believe it is a good progression of areas to stay in - 1st few trips in the St Germain des Pres, then the 7th, then the Marais, then the quieter areas in the 7th & 15th.
