Paris Hotels Need help please
I am traveling to Paris next month and wanted to know where the best part of town to stay in...I was thinking of staying at a hotel at CDG and taking the train intown daily or would it be better to stay on the right bank? My budget is $200 a night and I'm taking my inlaws so we defintely need a decent place to stay. Any advise would be greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance.

Oh, please don't stay at a hotel at CDG and go into Paris daily! You can get a very nice 3* hotel in Paris for $200 a night. The trip from CDG is deadly, time-consuming and expensive to do twice a day. You will enjoy evenings in Paris, a wonderful time, much more if you stay in the city. We love the St. Germaine area and have stayed in 3 very nice hotels - the Fleurie, Le Regent and the Hotel Sts. Peres. I would highly recommend all and think they have rooms within your budget.

I would vote for any hotel within one block or so of the ecole militaire metro stop because: lots of good bib gourmand Michelin restaurant in area, good hotel selection, rue Cler is a good source of high quality between meal snacks (1 block from metro) and there is a bus line (82 I think) that can take you right to the Arc de Triomphe. On the other hand St Germain has the art galleries and lots of street life in the evening--both great locations and easy access to all of Paris.

I agree with the poster who suggests the rue Cler area...Hotel du Champ de Mars, Hotel Muguet, Hotel Grand Levesque. The rue Cler is full of shops selling fruit and vegetables, flowers, cheese, meats (Davoli). There's a bakery (Il Fournil), Chinese takeout, Cafe du Marche and 2 mini markets right there. Nearby is a post office, laundry and the Metro (Ecole Militaire) is 3 min away. Lots of good restaurants within a 10 min walk. The Eiffel Tower is 10 min and the Arch de Triomphe is about a 25 min walk. I know that for a twin accomodation at Champs de Mars, my son and I will be paying 78 Euros/night...that's for next June. Muguet is slightly higher.

Good heavens, NO, do not stay near CDG. That would be like visiting New York and staying in Scranton!
If your inlaws are not the type to appreciate the "charm" of small rooms that look lke somebody's grandmother decorated best avoid the Grand Leveque, though the rue Cler is a darling place. Also look into the Hotel Victoria Chatelet at www.hovicha.com

I think it would be more like going to New York and staying on Long Island near JFK, not a fun trip (which I unfortunately had to do once courtesy of TWA making me miss the last flight).

I think St-Germain would be a good choice, and many people do find the 1st convenient, also. I'm no big fan of rue Cler, myself, although I know a lot of people like it -- in this case, I think those hotels suggested might be somewhat less than desired as indicated by Marie's budget as they are simple 2 star hotels, unless they really wanted to stay in cheap hotels and didn't think they could get something around $100 in Paris. I think that general area would be fine.
