Paris Flat Rental and...Avignon?
Greetings fellow travelers.
2 quick requests;
Small flat rental with kitchen and terrace in Paris in residential neighborhood that is close to touristy areas and/or metro stop. We have used waytostay.com with good results in Barcelona and Amsterdam. We tend to like more off the beaten path "local" neighborhoods with friendly small cafes, restaurants, bars (the type of neighborhood that is a respite after a day of sightseeing). We're low key, just like to have a comfortable place to land at the end of the day.
We will be in Cannes for one night (for work) working our way to Paris. We're thinking Avignon might be the best 1-2 night stay on our way to Paris, but would love your suggestions. We would like to get a taste of the coast and Provence but only have 1-3 days to do so, before heading to Paris for more work. No car for us, so train travel is an essential consideration.
Thank you!

I did it and if your plan is to see the French coast there are places not to be missed
1. Antibes = fantastic colorful little town
2. Avignon = the walled city is marvelous)
3. Nice = very chic big city, beautiful and artsy
4. Monaco = a must, it's little very pretty for a day but cool to visit and to have been there
5. Aix en provence = very beautiful and the place where I felt provence the most!
Avoid
1- Saint Tropez = probably the most overrated place on the planet, nothing but hordes of tourists who heard St Tropez is chic so they go and of course expensive boutiques and snobby people who think they are cool because they are in St Tropez. In reality there's nothing remarkable about this place...... it's only chic because supposedly many celebrities in the 50's used to go there, but it looks uglier, more boring and less remarkable than nearby beautiful Antibes!
2- I love Marseilles, the best city in France outside of Paris, lots of character and real!! but many people go to Marseilles expecting to find a gorgeous Paris in the mediterranean, in reality Marseilles is a very dirty, rough city..... it's a city of sailors, old, run down and not the cleanest!!!! so if you're the type of tourist who gets impressed only when faced with a clean beautiful hygienic pristine palace or square Marseilles is to avoided!!! now if you're the tourist that loves seeing things how they really are and see the cities one on one, then GO for sure!

In Paris we stayed in Montmartre in a fabulous 2 BR apartment with a terrace that had an incredible view up to Sacre Couer. They also have 2 1-BR units in the same building. Nice apts. -- very clean and you pay in dollars. Loved the building and neighborhood. Great little stores, cafes, restos all around. Plus, close to 3 metro stations.

We stayed here in September. Nice compromise location - away from the center but near the calm and beautiful Canal Saint-Martin in one direction and the bustling Place de la Republique in the other. Lots of Metro connections here, too.

Thanks everyone! One more question - we've heard that visiting Avignon in Jan. is not the best time due to the chilly weather. 1) is this true, and if so 2) Is there another good stop on the train line between Cannes and Paris that you'd recommend (probably a 2-2.5 day stop)? We like historic neighborhoods to explore, casual local dining, and some cultural activities (we'll go to a museum or two but won't spend the whole time there). Thanks!

yes, it is true because it is winter. It will still be winter anywhere else on that line.
Temps will probably be 0 to 10 degrees (Centigrade), or 30 to 50 F (low to high). It rains in January, also, maybe 25 pct of the time.
