Ah, a key word here--"y first trip to Paris" PLEASE simplify your trip by taking the taxi option for a stress free arrival at your hotel. Print out a map of your hotel's address from the pagesjaunes.fr to hand to your taxi driver with the address on it. You will get to the hotel, check in, freshen up and be ready to hit the road for your first wonderful sight of Paris.
The Metro is an easy mode of transportation once you are in the city. It is not difficult from CDG IF you are pretty familiar with the RER. But having done it personally, it is just not great to make the correspondances and up and down stairs to change trains.

Another key phrase: "Transportation to and from the airport is obviously required but not something I want to pay a lot for."
livtotrvl hasn't said one way or the other whether s/he is willing to walk a little to save €35-40, so without knowing that, I will refrain from making a recommendation based on my own taste and/or world view.

livtotrvl, I have friends who also got a deal at the Bel Ami (although theirs was in the off-season) and they give the hotel very high marks.
How many people are you traveling with? If it's just one person in addition to you, a shuttle will be cheaper (although they have varying degrees of reliability). If there are three or more of you to split the fare, a taxi will most likely be less expensive.
And while the RER is definitely the cheapest, I don't recommend it if you have a lot of bags. We did it twice and wouldn't do it again. One time--on the way to CDG--the train stopped for a very long time and we missed our plane, so that may have colored our experience with the RER.
