Paris

I would be travelling coming March 2010 .However, this will be a very budget trip for myself & my boyfriend. I am very excited about this trip as this is my first time to Paris, Any suggested itenaries for a 7 day stay ? Was wondering if there will be enough time or budget to go over to Swiss Alps, heard that that place is beautiful too.

No, not enough time for the Alps.

I would start be reading the Fodor's Paris guide on htis site, and consider buying the guide.

I would then seach here for Paris, there are many itineraries posted.

I would then get a map, and see where all the stuff is, and what makes senses in terms of order.

You could spend every hour of every day at museums, you could even spend every day of the whole trip and not see all of the Louvre!. For that reason, it is important to know your interests. To see the 'tourist sites', the above suggestions will cover those.

I would then give us your budget, since that is a 'soft' word. one's person low budget is another's high budget.

No, the Alps should wait until you have more time. You need a guidebook and a map to get you started. And read through all the posts here about Paris. No one can give you an ITINERARY with so little to go on. Think about what drew you to plan a trip to Paris to begin with...that should be a good start.

Will echo everyone else here in suggesting that you get some guidebooks and do some research on this forum for attractions and itinerary suggestions, then repost with a first-draft itinerary. Paris is heavily covered on this board, and there are scads of things to see in this city.

As a start, I usually put on paper a chart of the days. Day 1, jet lag and gettgin to hotel, so not a full day. Day 7, get to airport so not a full day. I then look at areas.

For example...
Notre Dame and Ile St Louis area would take a full day. What days and times are Notre Dame, St Chapelle, Archeological Crypt, Conciergerie open? Are there guided tours at certain times? How can I access the area (RER/Metro)? Any good restaurants (Ile St Louis does). Any thing else to do (Seine river cruise, walk along Seine, shopping on Ile St Louis...etc..)? Any walking tours (yes, Paris Walks)?

And thus is planned one day.

Or you pick the top...say 10...things you want to see, then plug into the chart. No more than 2 a day. Include time to wander in area of the 'thing'. Have a list of restos.

Switzerland does not lend itself to bedget travel, esp in ski seasons - so I would eliminae that idea.

How many days on the ground do you actualy have - not counting the day you arrive and the day you leave?

You could esily spend all of that time in paris - or perhaps do a day trip by train - dependng on your interests (Versailles? Strasbourg?)

The qustion is - what do YOU want to do?

I probably do Michel's idea of blocking out the trip, and find the DK Eyewitness Guide a great help in this as it shows you what is in the "quarter" you are looking at.
And no Alps. probably not even a day trip outside Paris.

My husband and I are embarking on our 1st trip in May. I just secured our apartment rental after much reading here and in Rick Steve's France 2011 book to find which neighborhood suits us. We chose Arrondondissement 4 for it's proximity to scenic bus route 69 and the Batobus on the Seine, both of which stop at many cultural sights for the price of one ticket.

Do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself with the metro system before you go. If you're on a budget and want to get around the city, it's the only way to go.

Start here and follow the itinerary sets provided, then add to it with your personal preferences....

I might substitute a night-time Seine cruise for the Batobus if seeing Paris from the river is your goal. Batobus for an A to B trip would be nice.
