First, your ID looks familiar. Is your mother's name Marta? If so, we emailed a few years ago when she was going to Provence. Tell her I said hello (if she remembers me).

I was just in Paris and on one of the walking tours I took I was speaking with a young woman, on her own, who was staying in the Hotel Pont Royal. She had a single room without bathroom for 37E. I believe she said that a single with bath was about 45 or 50E. I'm thinking that this hotel would meet your price requirements for a double room. It's located at the bottom of rue Mouffetard near the Gobelins Metro station and she got the hotel from Rick Steves' book on Paris. Sorry I don't have any further info on the hotel such as phone or fax number.

You might look in a library for a copy of the book or go to a book store and just copy the information. If that hotel doesn't have vacancies there might be other budget suggestions for you in the Rick Steves book. You could also check the Let's Go Paris book. I've used budget accommodations they're recommended and have been satisfied.

There are plenty of hotels at that rate in Paris and August is often discounted for hotels. You will probably have trouble finding anything with AC for that rate, but other than that, no problem. I've heard of Hotel des Ecoles in St-Germain. that's a great location, I think you'd like it, and it's your budget. You can see about it on www.123france.com

That is a good website as they list a lot of hotel discounts for August. Just look in their two star section. There is also a good hotel called Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in the LAtin Qtr, but it's somewhat more expensive -- but it's supposed to be very nice.

I'm wondering if Adrienne means the Port-Royal-Hotel? (Hi, Adrienne!)

This excerpt from the Washington Post April 1999 web review states:
"The meticulously well-kept Port-Royal Hotel, near the Luxembourg Gardens and other Left Bank attractions, is a good example of the budget hotel's evolution. Twenty years ago, most small hotels in France had rooms with sinks only; showers and toilets were in the hallway. Here you'll still find some of those bare-bones rooms, but now there are beautiful new pay showers in the hallway, and many rooms have been renovated with private baths.
The Port-Royal also has wide halls and a central staircase.
Moving closer to "Mouffe" is the spankingly well-maintained one-star Port-Royal Hotel

You're probably right about the hotel. I wrote it down while chatting with someone who was staying there and can't read my handwriting, mistaking pont for port and confusing the order of the words. Your write up certainly sounds like the hotel. The woman staying there liked it and liked the price, that's why I jotted it down; thought it would come in handy for next trip.

Given the location near Gobelins metro, it must be the Port Royal (a one-star hotel, but always reviewed well). There is a Hotel Pont Royal, a nice 4* SRS property in the 7th, def. not $80 per night.

Yes, Hi! Adrienne!! Thank you so much for the Eiffel Tower tickets. I used them one night to go up and then again the next person to be one of the very 1st people to go up that day - really cool.

I called the Port Royal last summer to inquire about a room. Madame could not speak English and the English-speaking person was off (I believe it was the weekend) so I was going to write her a letter but instead decided on the Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc. It's in a great location.

Uh, that should be next "night" not next person.

Stayed a the Hotel de l'esperance for less than 80 two years ago. It is in Rick Steves book and we liked it very much but i don't think that they added ac. I don't think you'll find an ac hotel for anything near that price. That neighborhood seems very safe and we liked it a lot. Enjoy Paris.

Hotel de Turenne is a clean 2-star that says it has A/C. It is near Metro Ecole-Militaire, and is located between Invalides and Tour Eiffel. The rue Cler market street is nearby, and a number of cafes, a small grocer, bank w/ ATM, laundromat, etc. We stayed at this hotel in 2000, and found it to be fine for the price, nothing fancy, a little worn spot here and there, but clean. (we had no need to test the A/C in April).

Haven't stayed at this hotel (Beaugrenelle St-Charles), but it is close to your budget while offering A/C.
The advertisement says there is a 25% reduction during August. Its location is a little off-center, but close to the Seine, and I think another frequent poster (Christina?) has stayed in this area, and says it is OK.

As long as the Metro is nearby, the location doesn't have to be perfect, especially if A/C is important to fit into your hotel budget (not many in this price range with A/C). I can imagine that it would be desirable in August.

yes, I have stayed in that area near place St-Charles. It's fine, just not as close-in to main tourist attractions as might be preferable. It's not that far though, just a few more metro stops, and not as upscale shops etc, of course. But that can be good as restaurants and cafes are cheaper. I don't know that hotel but I think it is one of the few that Sandra Gustafson recommends in the 15th arr (in my old Cheap Sleeps in Paris, she recommend that one, the Charles Quinze and the Fondary as good 2 stars in that area). They also have a presentation with Aug discounts on www.123france.com. Actually, that's not a bad choice for an AC 2* hotel.
