parents and young adult offspring -10 days inprovence

Our daughter is going to Avignon for study in September. We, as a family, want to visit prior to this, familiarising ourselves with her future abode whilst having a holiday.
Our budget is slender so wonder where there is cheap apartment / self-catering accomodation to be had.
We can rent a car or make train journeys to some sights. Perhaps the 9 days could entail only a visit or two to Avignon and the rest could be in a smaller (ie less expensive) town. Our son is 18 and daughter 20 so they won't be too keen on 'the-middle-of -nowhere' places for sleeping.
Any suggestions re getting there, being there and secret / insider tips hugely welcomed.

You could check out http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites to look for self catering places in the area.

Cant really help too much with the area.

Enjoy!

It depends on what you call a 'slender'budget. Gites which are like B&B's are all over the place. We stayed in one for about 50 euros per night, so even two rooms would only cost you 100 euros per night, including breakfast. Get a car and head out into the countryside - that is the magic of Provence! The children might surprise you.

How much "prior" do you want to visit? Avignon has arts festivals in July, and of course August means top-dollar for accommodations.

thanks all very much for the advice - the gites sound good and I am about to follow jamikins link. Thank you zeppole for those links - sadly, yes, it is August for us. (Well sadly, financially... glad to be going there otherwise!!)

I've never seen a hotel in that area that had higher rates in August than the rest of the high season (eg, July or September). IN fact, the Bristol hotel has discounts in August compared to July and June.

IME Christina is correct -- often rates tend to be lower in August, not higher.
