Overnight Train from Venice to Rome

Can anyone recommend an overnight train from Venice to Rome? I thought there was a Eurostar but was unable to find info on line. I tried trenitalia.com and raileurope.com Thanks so much.

Does it have to be overnight? What timeframe are you thinking of travelling?

Hi susana,

I you must have an overnight train, try going from Venice to Trieste and then to Rome.

The 21:25 gets you to Rome at 6:56.

We would prefer it to be overnight. We arrive in Venice on a Tuesday afternoon and would like to spend all day Wednesday and Thursday.

Ira, have you taken the night train. What's it like on a couchette. I've never been on a night train before. Thnx. Susana

Hello,
My sister & I took the train from Rome to Venice and also the return train several days later. I have heard that you should avoid the night trains, as they are not safe. You really don't want to be asleep on them.
Go first class in the daytime. You need to reserve in advance, then you have reserved seats. It's worth the extra cost not to feel like cattle! We had very nice rides. People were friendly; many other tourists. If you get the early morning train, you'll be in Rome by the afternoon, still time for a cappucino & and a nice dinner. Enjoy!

Susana - The overnight service from Venice is an ICN, not a Eurostar.

It leaves Venice S. Lucia just after midnight - 00.04.

It arrives at Roma Tiburtina rather than Termini. (You can catch the metro from Tiburtina to central Rome).

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Hi Susana,

The 0004 from Venice SL is the same one that leaves from Trieste. It makes 9 stops between Venice and Rome.

>What's it like on a couchette. <

Dreary. You share a compartment for four and sleep in your clothes.

A couchette will cost about 57E. With all the stops, you won't get much sleep anyway, so I suggest that you get 1 cl seats. 49E

An alternative:
Take the 17:34 IC (39E for 2cl) or the 18:32 ES (45E for 2cl). Bring a picnic. Arrive Rome about 23:15. Sleep in a real bed in a hotel.

Hi Susana,
When we were in Italy last May, we took the night train twice, once from Naples to Sicily and once from Sicily to Rome. Each time we took a late evening train and woke up the next morning at our destination. We had a sleeping compartment for 2 that had 2 bunks and a sink. There was a lock on the door and we felt very safe locked in our little compartment. We loved it. In fact, it was one of the things my husband loved best about our trip. Take Ira's advice about going from Venice to Trieste then to Rome. Have a great time!

Ira - I haven't quite understood the logic of going to Trieste to catch that train.

Apart from the added cost, it adds about 6 hours to the journey time.
Am I missing something?

Hi Steve,

Going to Trieste and catching the train at 21:25 instead of 00:04 in Venice would allow them a night's sleep. (maybe)

Hmmm - I think a bottle of Bellini would have the same effect, Ira

Steve

P.S. That train starts in Venice - so chances are you can get on board an hour beforehand anyway ...

Thanks so much to everyone Final verdict: no couchettes, and a good night's sleep. We're taking an earlier train and spending another night in Rome. We're at the Franklin Feel the Sound - anyone stayed there?

WHY do you want to do that? It is only a few hours by train and not worth a lost night's sleep and discomfort.
