hello there, thinking about spending a night
in venice travelling from rome. is it worth it as its miles away . whats the best value form of transport other than a car????
is it a good time to go at end of sept??
I would so appreciate some help as havent a word of italian (UNFORTUNATELY)

With nearly a 5 hour train ride each way I would not consider it.

You lack of Italian will not be a problem.

I would do such a trip by train to avoid unfamiliar-driving-in-Italy difficulties. Also, I would would only do this if I could get a VERY early train to Venice and a VERY late tran back to Rome.

It is a long trip for an overnight,as bob says.

How long are you in Rome?
Maybe a night train, one way or both ways could help? There is 1 from Roma Tiburtina at 22.53, arriving in Venice at 5.31. Sleeping in the train saves you a night.

Why not fly?

I can't imagine anything worse than trying to sleep on a train and arriving without a shower and not being refreshed at 5:30 in the morning to spend a day exploring the city -- but that's just me.

In Venice this summer, we literally ran into my partner's dermatologist and his wife and two daughters on a dock in Venice. They were in Italy for two weeks, and at the last minute decided to add Venice. They had driven to Venice just for the day from Lake Garda and were returning there that evening. This week back home, all he can do is rave about the best part of the trip was their day in Venice. So although I thought they were crazy at the time, it just shows that a day in Venice can still be extraordinary.

I say go for it, so long as you can spend one night there. Take a train early one morning, have a full afternoon, evening, night, and morning, then return late the next day. You won't regret it. Use the train time to take in the scenery and to catch up on your journals, etc.

An overnight is not a bad idea. The more days you can add the better.

You take the ES* train from Rome TE to Venice San Lucia. Do *not* get off in Mestre.
