Orvieto via Naples to Positano Advice Needed
Hi Gang-
Would love your advice. We will be taking a train from Orvieto to Naples in September. Is it better to:
#1 take the local train to Sorrento and then bus to Positano. Dropped off somewhere near the hotel.
#2 take the hydrofoil to Positano. But then end hike up the steep stairs to the hotel with luggage. is that crazy?
#3 forget public transportation after the long train ride and hire a car/driver or taxi to Postino.
Thanks so much!

Here is how I would do it, if the schedules work out:
1. Train from Orvieto to Napoli Mergellina Station.
2. Walk 500 yards to Mergellina Hydrofoil Dock
3. Hydrofoil to Positano
4. Pay hotel to bring luggage from port.
Otherwise, take the train to Naples Centrale Station, connect to Circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento, connect to SITA bus to Positano (many more schedule possibilities).

...but, if you take the Mergellina hydrofoil version, be sure that is actually running. There were two big signs saying "Positano" when we were there in early July, but no hydrofoil going there. We actually had to go to the other dock to take the hydrofoil which was a very, very long walk and a 10 minute drive in traffic by car.

Sounds like good advice above.
Also, be mindful of your pockets and purse, etc. because like any city, there are plentiful pickpockets in the Naples train station.
Would you believe 2 kids on a moped reached through our open car window and grabbed the strap of my purse - I won the tug of war, the purse broke and all they got was the strap.
Just stay alert in downtown Naples, and you'll have a great time!
