opinions and advice on hotel choices for rome and venice

have searched many hotels for both cities and found Navona Garden Suites in Rome and Ca'Dogaressa in Venice. Trip advisor gave them great reviews. I am pretty sure I will stay at Navona but not 100% sure about Ca'Dogaressa. Please tell me what you think about locations for both hotels and accomodations. If you have better suggestions, would love to hear. Leaving for trip on Oct 5 and will return October 17 so need to make some reservations.

I don't know about your hotels (have heard of Ca'Dogaressa, though) but I will offer you my hotel info from our trip Sept 07...

In Venice we stayed in Dorsoduro by the Ca' Rezzonico museum, about 50 meters from the vaporetto stop by the same name. The hotel was Locanda San Barnaba on Calle Traghetto. It was a very quiet place, very lovely with a 1st floor salon, marble staircases, sweet patio with umbrella tables and a private boat 'dock'. I would happily stay there again - the gentlemen at the desk was very charming and enjoyed talking with the guests, and he also ran the bar and espresso machine. There is no elevator but the staff will carry your bags up. There were a number of good restaurants within a 10-minute walk yet hardly any 'tourist' traffic in the immediate area. Our rooms were the 'classic' doubles for 170euro (one with double bed, one with twin beds - we were 2 couples).

In Rome we stayed on via del Tritone at Residenza Antica Roma, very beautifully decorated, every floor with a 'parlor' area where you could gather, chat, plan.. This hotel does have a tiny but functional elevator and an excellent breakfast room with 'do-it-yourself' coffee machine (I liked one shot espresso + one cappucino in my cup). We used the city buses that ran along via del Tritone or a couple blocks down at the San Silvestro square. We walked as far as the Colosseum, Piazza Navona, and Piazza del Popolo from this hotel. I would happily stay here again as well. Our rooms were 170euro for one double room and one twin room.

In both cases, we booked directly with the hotel. They were amenable to a 10euro discount for cash payment at checkout.

I haven't stayed at either hotel, so I can only comment on what I glean from Tripadvisor and the hotels' websites.

The Ca'Dogaressa looks charming and has an incredibly good rate for Venice. The reviews are consistently very good with really only one negative comment from one traveler about the quality of the bed in one room. The hotel is definitely far from the main tourist area which can be good or bad depending on what you prefer. You'll be walking a lot (which you'll be doing anyway) and/or taking the vaporetto to get to the popular sights at the opposite side of the city. You may not be served breakfast canal-side if the weather in October doesn't cooperate, and the breakfast room looks small and perhaps windowless.

The location of the Navona Garden Suites is excellent, and the small garden terrace off the rooms is a rare amenity. I couldn't find a rate on either Tripadvisor or the Navona's website, so I can't compare this with other options. Although the TA reviews mentioned the wonderful hosts, the photos would seem to portray something unlike a typical hotel. If you require/desire the usual hotel amenities, this may not be the right place.

I forgot to mention that you might get more responses if you mention the hotels in your title. Many people dislike opening what they think is just another "generic" question about hotels in particular cities.

I pretend-booked the Navona Garden for mid-April and the rate came back at 390€/night. Yikes.

Rose, what is your budget and what type of accommodation are you looking for?

The Hotel La Calcina http://www.lacalcina.com
on the Zattere in Dorsoduro east (close to the Gesuati) is a shortish walk to the Ponte d'Accademia and close enough to San Marco but without the crowds.
Prices range from Euro 99 in off season to 160 in high season - without view, with air con.
Nearby there is a supermarket and also a vaporetto stop. The price is reasonable and includes breakfast but there is no lift. You could ask for Room 7 if you are not paying the extra for a view of the Canale della Giudecca - it still has a corner window view.

My budget is around 200 - 225 american. Also, has anyone stayed at the Ca'Angeli Guest house is Venice?
emailed La Calcina and their rate with a view was close to $300.

Hi, Rose. What I would suggest is that you look for hotels with your total 12-night budget in mind. For example, you'll pay a little more for "equivalent" lodging in Venice compared to Rome. So, look slightly above your $200-225 per night budget in Venice and then below your budget in Rome.

There is convent lodging in Rome with rates that are, for the most part, lower than rates of hotels and B&Bs. Some have "curfews" in that the front door is locked by 10 or 11 p.m. or midnight. You might look into this option and see if it appeals to your needs and budget.

With regard to Tripadvisor, I'd search both hotels and B&Bs (separately) in your budget range. Unfortunately, you still have to check rates directly because TA's rates are an average over 12 months and not reflective of high-season October. On Venere.com you can make an availability and rate inquiry via a link on the page for each hotel.

Let us know if you identify more possibilities.

I can highly recommend the Corte 1321 B&B in Venice. It is located 5 mts from the Rialto Bridge, in the San Polo district.

The B&B is owned by American mother/daughter and was absolutely lovely. It was our favorite accommodation through Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome. We would go back in a heartbeat! Rooms are quite large, double French windows that look out onto a lovely courtyard, our bathroom also was large and had big French window that opened onto little canal. We paid E150 ($200) a night for a double, in mid-October. Here is website: http://www.corte1321.com/en/sent_request.htm

Have a wonderful time!!!

Here are a few other central Rome hotels to check out:

http://www.residenzafarneseroma.it (CALL them for best price and to inquire about specials)

http://www.hotelcampodefiori.com/

http://www.solealbiscione.it/ (Excellent budget option..120€-135&euro

http://www.hotelrinascimento.com/ (Excellent prices for location)

www.hotelteatrodipompeo.it (VERY nice, central, and within budget)

http://www.residenzacanali.com/ (Very nice small hotel, most charming location - and even a suite is within budget here)

http://www.hotelnavona.com/ (either hotel on this website)

We are booked into the Navona Garden Suites for a few nights in June; the reviews are very good.

Travelnut, when you did your "test" for April, I think your figure is the total for whatever nights you used - I just did it and the figure comes up as a total. 4 nights = @$500 E, for example.

We stayed at La Calcina in Venice last summer, would really recommend it.

Oh, I hope so! it said "rate" so I took that to mean the room rate, not the total price.

Socaltraveler, what did you think of the Navona Garden Suites? I know the location is great, but how are the rooms themselves? Did you happen to check out the Navona Gallery Suites while you were there? If so, how were those suites?

I am just starting to research places to stay for a short trip to Rome on our way to the Amalfi Coast. This is not our first trip so I thought we would try something close to Piazza Navona and not a hotel. Thanks for any help.

Hello. I don't have a recommendation for a hotel in Rome, but in Venice my family and I stayed at: Hotel Reiter.
www.hotelreiter.com
Viale S. Maria Elisabetta, 57
30126 Venezia (VE), Italy
+39 041 5260107
You can not beat the price of this 2 star hotel, and the breakfast was really great. It is in Lido and you walk a couple of blocks to take the vaporetto that in 15 min leaves you in piazza San Marco.

I'm often in Rome in Via Cassia just 10 min. From Ponte Milvio There is a B&B in a Villa, very nice and not expensive €65 double room with private services, they have a big garden with terrace, private parking etc... Adriano the owner is a very kind person i suggest willawilson. http://www.villawilson.com/

Just wondering if vardon or socaltraveler or others who have stayed at these Suites may have some feedback on the Navona Garden Suites and also the Navona Gallery Suites, specifically the Borromini Suite's size.

Location does seem great and web pictures look very nice.

Just want to say that you should stay in Venice proper if you can at all afford it. Otherwise you miss the experience of living in an Italian town with no cars, no trucks, and no Vespas. The relative silence is wonderful, very relaxing.

So I disagree with plind's suggestion of staying on the Lido; the Lido has cars.
