Opera in Rome

My husband and I will be leaving for our first trip to Europe next week. We have tickets to see Madame Butterfly at the outdoor opera at the Baths of Caracalla. Has anyone ever been there before? I was just wondering if it's as "dressed to the nines" an event as going to the opera here is. I know, I know, it's a shallow question, but I don't want to be the only doofus there in a skirt and flip-flops if everyone else will be all decked out in formal wear. (Or worse, if we'll be turned away for inappropriate dress-- it does happen) Anyone else know anything?

We have been a couple of times but not recently. It is definitely not a dressy occasion. Being outdoors, it is likely to be hot, the seats are not very comfortable and people, for the most part, were dressed very informally when we were there. You should be fine in a skirt and flip-flops. Pity the poor soul in formal wear!

Bringing your message back up "to the top" since you are new here - - how do I know that? Click on your own name. It's a valuable tip that Fodors fails to provide to you when they send that initial e-mail confirming your registration.

Best wishes,

Rex

Athough I visited the Baths of Caracalla a few years ago, I last saw an opera there in the summer of 1960! Aida, magnificent. Hot and humid and the most comfortable were those, like me, who dressed very casually.

How did you get tickets for the opera. I tried one web site, but did not here back from the email.

Any other ideas?
