One night in Lisbon - is 83 euros a good deal?

We are flying into Lisbon and then driving to the Algarve. We will do the opposite for our departure. Since we have a morning flight, I thought it would be best if we headed to Lisbon the day before (do some sightseeing) and then spend the night. That way we are sure to make our flight in the morning.

I have found the Marriott is offering a summer special of 83 euros per night/room so I reserved 3 rooms.

Can I do better somewhere else or is this about as good a deal as one can get?

Thanks.

You can do better almost everywhere else.
Pick a 5 star from 60€ per double.

Is that a bidding site?

Thanks.

I think you can do just as well if not better. While nothing wrong with the Mariott location, it is a bit out of the center of historic Lisbon.
My preference would be to be somewhere that you could easily walk to dinner and sit and watch people, especially if only for the one night each way.
All of the bidding sites that I am familiar with historically have chosen the Mariott. This may have changed recently but the price they offer for that hotel has been less than E83.
Of course, I don't know if you are there during what they consider high season.
Remember, it is very easy to get to the aiport from the historic center of Lisbon. Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive. We even have taken one at 4:00am with no trouble if you are around Rossio or Chiado and probably other areas also.

Hi Sher, thanks for your reply. We will be there in August and will have a car that we will need to drop off at the airport. I know the Marriott is only 4 miles from the airport and is running a summer rate, which on the surface seems very good but we do need 3 rooms and the kids would prefer less $$.

I would prefer not using a bidding site because I have never done it before (although I think my oldest son has). We just need to be certain we can find our way to the airport in the morning.

That link above does give a nice list of hotel names so we could still check them out.

Hi,

I stay at the Marriott in Lisbon for about two weeks most years, because it's right across the street from the university where I give a course. It is a bit out of the way, not in a very pretty part of Lisbon, but as you note it's extremely convenient to the airport. And if you are going to have your car while you are there, there is ample free parking and you wouldn't have to navigate downtown Lisbon.

If I understand you correctly, you plan to have the car with you for the two nights in Lisbon (one at beginning and one at end of trip), and if that's the case I think the Marriott is a very good choice. It's very close to the main highways so you can avoid going into the city center. From the Marriott to the center, you can take a 10 minute metro ride (metro stop is about 10 minute walk from hotel) or a 4-6E cab ride.

If you'd like to find something cheaper than the Marriott, give us an idea of price, location, and amenities, and I'll bet there are people here with suggestions.

Thank you, Laurie, for your reply and for your description of the hotel location. We only need 1 night on the departure side of our trip (so that in case we get lost on our return from the coast to Lisbon we won't miss out flight!).

Anyway, my SIL told me to check Novatel and Ibis, which we are doing.

Thank you, logos999.

I am pretty sure there are a lot of Ibis hotels in Lisbon -- I remember seeing some on the outskirts and in downtown as well. The Novotel I'm familiar with is on this kind of odd "hotel street" (I think it must have been constructed in connection with the Expo). There are several other hotels on that street (and I think one of them is an Ibis), which is close to the Zoo/Sete Rios as well as relatively close to the Praca Espanha. Looking at my Lisbon map, the street name is Jose Malhoa, don't know if that's where you're looking. It would be slightly more difficult to get to driving in from out of town, and I'm not sure if the street parking will be hard to get but there is a fair amount of unmetered street parking there.

The real advantage is that it's close to what I think is the best sushi restaurant in Lisbon, a place called Aya, located in the complex at the end of the street, with the unfortunate name of "Twin Towers."

If proximity to the airport is the primary consideration, there's also a Radisson that's even a km or two closer to the airport than the Marriott, but I have no idea what the hotel is like or what its rates are.

We did this on our trip last month. Spent the last night at the Radisson SAS Hotel before our flight in the morning. It's a 5 minute drive to the airport/car rental drop-off. There is a gas station on your way there even. I am not sure when you are traveling, but I plugged in a date in August and rates were about 80 euro, but there was a "hot deal" for 60 euro. Not sure what the restriction are with that deal. Parking was expensive - check that. But there is a lot outside the hotel that if you can find space, it's free.

I want to say thank you to both laurie and pegbos for the information. I'm having such internet connection problems that I get bumped off so quickly. I will continue to check your suggestions. Thanks!

I just tried Priceline for a 4 star hotel in central Lisbon and offered $70.US. The site came back and offered a 4 star hotel if I paid an extra $22. but I declined as I will wait another week or so - I need the hotel for mid September. Priceline is very easy to use and there is a site called biddingfortravel that gives you tips on how to use it. The downside is that you can't cancel once you have booked and of course you don't know exactly which hotel you will get. To see the kinds of hotels Priceline may offer, you can look at their regularly priced hotels.

Why don't you consider returning the rental car before going to your Lisbon hotel. We did that in May, since we needed to be at the airport for our flight the following morning at the same time as the car rental counter opened. Remember that you need to allow time at the car rental counter - and there could be a long line at the counter.
