one day in messina and naples

WE are cruising the Mediterranean in November and will be stopping at Messina and Naples for one day each. Need suggestions on what to see and do. Is a trip to Taormino the best use of our day in Messina? Should we be concerned about our safety in either city? dap1206

Yes, in my opinion Taormina deserves teh visit. About Naples, I suggest to visit the town, its historical center and maybe if your date is late November it is nice and interesting to visit San Gregorio Armeno with its Christmas atmosphere and its "presepi".
Oh, about your safety, open your eyes !!!

Yes, and after visiting San Gregorio, head for the Capella Sansevero, where you can see the Veiled Christ and other other-wordly sculptures,

And then you must get a pizza on the Via dei Tribunali at Sorbillo

followed by a sfogliatella ( local pastry) at Scaturchio:

That sounds like a perfect afternoon, in my book!

All of these are within a fairly small walking area.

Thanks for the reply. Will consider your suggestion. We are in Naples for 10 hours. Anything else we should do? dap1206

for Naples, if you like museums you could spend a couple of hours at either the Capidomonte (amazing paintings, one of the finest museums in Italy) or the Archeological museum, with its Farnese sculptures and materials from Herculaneum and Pompeii.

You could visit additional monumental churches in the Center, all while strolling fascinating streets like Via Tribunali or Spaccanapoli which are part of the ancient Greek/Roman city grid. (you can actually go down into the ancient city at the Church of San Lorenzo).

You could catch the local Circumvesuviana train and in 30 min or so be touring the ruins of Herculaneum. We understand there is a good restaurant there, Viva Lo Re (we plan to do this very thing next month)

You could take the funicular up to the Vomero neighborhood and take in the view and visit the Certosa di San Martino.

You will find plenty to do in Naples, we are so looking forward to our own trip there!
