Norway trip questions
I'm planning a car trip to Norway in May. My husband and I have been there 3 times before; and have 2 questions based on my recollections: 1. Is main airport in Gardemoen or Fornebu? (Or are they the same?) 2. Is there a car ferry from Bergen to Stavanger or Kristiansand? Thanks!

Hi!
Gardermoen is now Oslo's main airport. Quite new. Took over for Fornebo in 1998, and is located some 50 km north-east of Oslo. Connected with express trains (20-22 minutes) from central Oslo, and tons of express buses (some 40 min). Fornebo airport no longer exists.
To my knowledge the only car "ferry" from Bergen and south to Stavanger is the Bergen-Stavanger-Egersund-Hanstholm(Denmark) ferries. Quite big and comfortable ships. For details see http://www.http://www.fjordline.com
My suggestion, though, is that in May you should go by car all the way, to experience the beautiful spring ow western Norway.
Anyway, welcome to Norway!,

Thanks for the information. I know the southern coastal drive is beautiful, having done it on our first trip to Norway in 1976! However, we have limited timewe have 2-1/2 days to get back to Oslo after leaving Bergen. Also want to stop in Arendal where my husbands roots are. I was afraid we might not be able to fit everything in! Will check it out some more.

Norway's National Day [i.e.,4th of July] is in Mid May but I can't remember when. A couple of years ago I happened to be in Trondheim that day. It is one of my best memories of all my trips. Native costumes, endless parades, childrens's bands, much celebration. It is worth checking into See where you will be that day and try to take advantage of it! It may be worth adjusting schedule to be sure you are in a semi-major city.

Hi
Our independence day is on the 17th of May. I'm sure that it would be a nice experience if you try to be in one of the major cities this day.
I live in Stavanger on the south-west coast and I have posted a few images from my hometown www.gardkarlsen.com. Feel free to visit it...and don't be afraid to get in touch if you have any questions.
Regards
Gard

There are no car ferries from Bergen to Stavanger. Ferries to England and Denmark call at Stavanger or Egersund en route, but are not available for domestic journeys. If you can ditch your car, there are fast catamarans from Bergen to Stavanger and trains from Stavanger to Kristiansand.

The shortest route from Bergen to Arendal would be going to Hardanger and drive the mountainroad through Setesdal to Arendal. You would miss Stavanger and the south-western coast. Possibly take the car ferry to Jondal or Rosendal and drive the new glacier-tunnel to Odda. From there you go on to Setesdal and go directly to Arendal. It is by large the same length in distance as Oslo-Bergen.
