I believe that Alitalia out of ORD only flies nonstop to Milan. Delta flies nonstop out of JFK to Venice. I would definitely agree about using the train for travel in Italy. My son spent last semester over in Torino(where the 2006 Winter Olympics are going to be held). It was an interesting town(not a Rome or Florence type but you can see the Alps and surrounding area from your hotel room). It had super food and things to see and do.It was also a great train connector toMilan,Nice, Genoa,Cinque Terre, etc.Your kids will love Italy! By the way-where do you live in Chicago? Did we ever have a Fodors get together in the last year? Just curious-thanks!

forgot to mention that at least in switzerland, your children travel free with you on trains everywhere if you take out a family card at train station.

this is very interesting.
i cannot tell you the details, perhaps someone can direct you to the swiss train info, but we did this years ago on ski trip.
it was great.

i believe it is the same on trams in germany. not sure about metro.
don't know about italy. sorry.
