Agree with Suze, I wouldn't know where to start.
However, on our first trip to Amsterdam my wife and I stopped at the VVV at the train station and signed up for one of the less expensive hotels, not far from the Dam.
Very nice, clean, comfortable place. It turned out that we were the only ones on our floor who stayed for more than an hour or so.
