Nokia phone ? -- Need XYZ123's expertise

I have an opportunity to buy a Nokia 3650 for $50. It looks like this is a tri-mode with 900/1800/1900, which is very unusual for an American model, but I've also seen reports that is harder to unlock than other Nokias (it's currently locked to AT&T). The website you've recommended before claims that they have a new calculator that works for the 3650 on AT&T. (I don't have time and don't want to ship it anywhere.)

1) Are the bands correct, even though it's American?
2) Do you think I will have trouble unlocking it? Do you know anything about this new calculator that supposedly works?

Thanks very much for all the info you've provided on this topic!

Can't really help as I don't really know the phone and don't know how good the calculator is....

Look you get 5 shots at unlocking the phone by use of the calculator; after that you have to bring it in for professional help with a cable....900/1800/1900 are the 3 bands you want if it is your intent to use the phone in Europe.

Personally I might opt for a slightly more expensive phone such as the Nokia 3100 or 3120 bought at several internet web sites which come unlocked or a dual band for around $70 to $80 with 900/1800 if the phone is simply for use in Europe and the rest of the world other than the USA.

Sorry I can't be of more help than that.

Well, thank you for checking the post and replying. As for the Nokia 3100s or 3120s, the cheapest I've found is $120, plus shipping, so it's almost 3 times the one I'm looking at.

I'm curious about why you recommend the 3100/3120 as better phones--they don't have camera or the internet capability of the 3650, as far as I can tell.

Thanks again for checking the thread and replying.

You might be able to answer the band question by finding the 3650 manual on line.

I would imagine that the calculator works. Be sure you read the instructions carefully and understand how to do every step correctly before you enter the codes into the phone.

Thanks, Robespierre. I did check the manual online at NokiaUSA and it does say 900/1800/1900--that's just really unusual for an American phone. Frequently, Nokia has two different versions of the model number--one for the US and one for everyone else, with different frequency bands. I was just afraid I was getting the info for the wrong version.

Thanks for the optimism on the calc--I've done some more searching and found a site specifically about unlocking the 3650, with a link to a calc that (hopefully) works and a couple of tips. I think I may go for it--it beats paying well over $100, plus I'm leaving in less than a week so I don't have many options left (time for shipping, etc.)--buying this used one locally seems like a better bet, in my case at least.
