Night Train from Zurich to rome
#2
You need to be aware that some of the night services which have been run in the past are going to change in December of this year.
I do not believe there is any timing which would not require at least one change and at least one of the timings is routed eastbound all the way to Innsbruck; the more direct route through Milan requires a layover of several hours in the middle of the night. You might be better off going during the day or taking the late Vueling Airlines non-stop to Rome.
In the meanwhile you can check by going to the Swiss Federal Railways site:
www.sbb.ch/en

Yup direct night trains Zurich to Italy scrubbed several years ago -either do as Dukey says or go to Munich where the night train originates and you can board earlier than in Innsbruck.
Check German Railways www.bahn.de/en for fares and specials. Night trains are not for everyone - for lots about night and day trains check www.ricksteves.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.seat61.com.
Look into flying - could be even cheaper than the train - if there were a direct night train I would recommend it but not the situation as it is.

wrong - can leave Zurich 17:30 or so get to Milan 21:30 and 90 minutes later board direct night train to Rome.
check www.bahn.de/en for schedules - where I found this.
Book Milan to Rome night train at www.trenitalia.com.

Oh and you get into Rome-Tiburtina station (not Termini the main station but just as good - even better IME because not so mobbed and metro and taxis are there) about 7:30 am.
So that night train possibility seems not so bad.

It doesn't make sense to go from Zurich to Munich (4 hours) to catch a night train. Look at flights to either Rome FCO or Rome Ciampino as you might find some budget flights. Otherwise, you take a train from Zurich to Milan (4 hours) and change for a train to Rome (3 hours). To book the Zurich/Milan portion, use www.sbb.ch. To book the Milan Central/Rome portion, use http://www.trenitalia.com/
For budget flights, look at www.whichbudget.com or www.skyscanner.com

See my posts above about the night train leaving Milan about 11pm or so for Rome.
Perhaps spend the day in Milan and have a late dinner and hop on the night train.

Well the Milan to Rome night train leaves around 11pm- may be cool to spend the day in Milan, etc but that would be rather late for some - RonZ and others flight suggestions make sense - if there were a direct Zurich to Rome night train then fine - you save on the cost of a hotel night and it is the ultimate daytime time saver.

<i> Night Train from Zurich to rome

For an illustrated introduction to night trains see http://www.enjoy-europe.com/hte/chap17/rail3.htm. The site https://www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml provides schedules and routes. Poke around on the German Rail site to find an itinerary you like.
A night train from Lucerne to Rome may not be your best option. You must change in Milan late at night and then take the overnight portion. This overnight portion makes several stops in the wee hours, and takes far longer than a day train.
A day train from Lucerne to Milano gives you a very scenic ride. Get into Milan early enough to catch an evening train to Rome.
The Milan train station is rather confusing. Allow time to find your train. In and around Milan train station is also one of the worst locales in Europe for beggars and pickpockets. Guard your stuff and ignore all "helpers" who will have you spotted in seconds.

Yes, but you still connect through Milan. There is an EC train that departs at 8:46 am and arrives Milan at 12:50. There is also an afternoon departure from Lucerne (around 4pm), but it leaves very little room to catch a non-change fast train onto Rome.
If you book the EC train on sbb, look for discount fares (saver fare).

but it is at night - and arrives in Rome about 7:30am - who would want to arrive quicker?
Spend the day in Milan perhaps.
