Nice Greeters

Hi All,

we'll be landing at Nice Airport at about 12h00 on 3 September, so we'll have a whole afternoon to ourselves (we have three nights there). On the nicetourism website, there is a link to Nice Greeters, which is locals that can take on a two and a half tour walk in Nice, according to your needs.

To us, it seems like a great way to be introduced to Nice through local eyes. Has anybody used them before, and would you recommend it?

Yes we did this in Sept. 2017 - it was OK. I think the greeter that we got was pretty new - she was very personable and took us on a walk up to the castle and back down but she was a little short on historical facts. I had been to Nice before but with 3 others who had not - it could have been much better content wise and even IMO route wise. Even tho we were very close to the Cours Salaya (sp) she sort of skirted around it and just headed up to the castle. But hey, it was free, so why not - you can give input as to what interests you and if you get a different greeter, it could be very good.

I think it's okay if you have that time to waste AND do not expect anything. Because you have no idea of the qualifications of such a person or what they know, etc. And the website itself kind of stresses that the greeter is mainly supposed to show you things that are important to them and NOT typical historical/tourist sites of interest. The website kind of says you can ask to see things but the greeter's main job is to do what they want (paraphrasing). I only saw that it was about 2 hrs.

As I said, it seems okay to me if you have that extra time in your schedule without feeling you are missing out on something you really wanted to do/see. It is free.

Thanks suec1 and Christina. Based on Christina's experience, it may just be a great experience, provided we have a more knowledgeable greeter. Still it is a chance we'll take, but hey, it is for free!

We'll probably give it a shot, but I promise to give some feedback when we return.

We met with a Paris Greeter in 2016, and had an amazing tour. We had requested "latin quarter" and our interests were jazz, bicycling, and food. We were first offered a greeter who wanted to give us a tour of the 16th arondissement (a different part of the city). We politely declined, and about 2 weeks before our trip we received another offer for the Latin quarter from a man who was knowledgeable in the the ancient Roman ruins that exist in that area of Paris. It rained the day of our meeting, but we bought an umbrella and went anyway. Our guide took us all over the area and stopped inside some old buildings in the Sorbonne and knew some people who let us peer into their antique filled offices! He also took us to a glass walled spot inside a parking garage that HE helped discover, ancient ruins. Amazing. Get this: he told us he even walked the route the day before to find spots to stop and speak where we'd be out of the elements! He also had looked up where we live in the US and gave us a printout showing ancient ruins in our town! Who knew?!!!

Moral of the story: Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get! Enjoy your greeter tour!

Thank you Joan. I am convinced that, if our experience is somewhere between yours and suec1's, it will be great!
