needs Venice restaurant recommendation

We will be spending New Year in venice and I need recommendation on good restaurants.

I have no recommendations for you, but I would strongly suggest that you reserve for New Year's Eve (when most restaurants offer special menus). The same applies, somewhat less rigidly, for New Year's Day lunch.

Check out the above for a wonderful review of great restaurants in all price brackets from someone who knows good food and is a regular visitor to Venice.

Personally, I loved both La Rivista and Fiaschetteria Toscana.

Last year we had our New Year's Eve dinner at Casin dei Nobili in the Dorsoduro neighborhood. We really enjoyed it. You must make reservations ahead. Enjoy your trip.

Just returning from Venice, I suggest to book at the Fiaschetteria Toscana NOW. We had a great dinner there yesterday. And it was fully booked. And we already had a great New Years Eve dinner at the same place in 1992. Since they have even more sophisticated menu items today, this really will be a big treat, especially if you like fish and seafood in the Italian style.

Fiaschetteria Toscana is one of those restaurants where, you can have a GREAT meal one night, and the next night, not-it is rather mercurial that way, it is very expensive, and it is not at all romantic-it is one of those listed in every tourist guidebook on Venice-that being said however, if you get there one night when the chef is in a good mood, you will have a great, but expensive, meal. For my money, I prefer to go to other trattorie in Venice where the food is consistently excellent, such as TRATTORIA ALLA MADONNA, on Calle della Madonna, where you are eating authentically Venetian, with the absolute freshest, best quality seafood, wonderfully prepared dishes, in a far more charming atmosphere (but busy) than FT.

We were just in Venice and especially enjoyed two restaurants. For top quality I recommend Vini al Covo, Campiello della Pescaria, Castello.
Al Covo is a cosy wood lined place,on a small square only a block from the Grand Canal. My wife ordered the raw fish platter and I had the mixed fish with soar. a kind of an onion vinegar mixture concoction popular in Venice.
Both proved to be delightful. We finished with a cheese platter. With the recommended wine a white from the Veneto the bill came to about $130 US dollars.
Alla Rivetta Da Lino is also in Costello but not quite as upscale.
It's informal and is a bit more rushed but you can get an excellent meal, particularly if you stick to the basics. For two with a decent red the cost would be about $90 to 100.
Reservations would be a good idea at either place.

I am amazed that you had dinner with wine at Al Covo and the bill was less than 100 Euro. Or was this lunch? I always thought that that restaurant was among the most costly in the city... Although perhaps you each had only the one dish and the cheese platter....in reading your post again I imagine that that explains the moderate price.. (I have never been)

Curious as to what Girlspytravel has to say about this restaurant...

I had a lovely dinner a few years ago at Al Covo. Simply excellent in my book. I had an appetizer, entre, dessert and wine and it was something like $75 US - BUT that was in 2000!

I would highly recommend them! Buon apetito.

Thanks, Dayle. I will keep it in mind for my next trip to Venice (no set date). The price you mentioned is more in line with what I would have imagined..you are quoting for one person, 7 years ago, right? I thought the food in Venice was just great; it certainly makes you hungry to read about all these meals! Thanks again!

Yes, for one. Pre-Euro, pre-dollar freefall! I'm sure it's a different story now. Lovely husband (Italian) and wife (Texan) who met while working at one of the big TX city hotels. She is a pastry chef, which is why I just had to have dessert. Be sure to leave room!

Since the original question was for a New Years Eve dinner, I would still stick to my recommendation of Fiaschetteria Toscana. Only, beside getting a reservation for NYE right NOW, I would also visit this place one or two days before NYE and get a feeling for the place, where to sit, which waiter is best etc...
We also like alla Madonna, but would never plan to spend NYE there. Madonna is great for an informal and quick dinner, but nothing for a formal and long evening like on New Years Eve...
And: Fiaschetteria Toscana is not more expensive than other places. It only has more choices on the menu...
