Caph52 -

Just wanted to remind you to read my review of Elder York -- vis a vis the STAIRS and fact that NOT all rooms are ensuite - you have to specify when you book.

Thanks, Bob. Believe me, I noticed the stairs part! Thanks for the warning about the ensuite bit.

Haven't got time just now to read all this properly. Your original link doesn't work for me but I gather it's for the ADAM Drysdale B&B ? Gilmore Place is pleasant enough and near a lot of decent pubs & places to eat but it's not in the centre or near the station - it's a bus ride or a 20-30 minute walk away, but near a good bus route.

You don't really say what your requirements are other than a twin for you & DS and fairly central, but I gather you want inexpensive & maybe particularly B&B ? Anyway, here are my most recent recommendations for budget-ish accommo -

£50pppn is standard for a nice B*B right in the centre - it then gets cheaper the further out you go. If £50pppn is within your budget look at the options on Abercromby Place, Northumberland Street and Dundas Street, all in the New Town (the central Georgian area, v. posh). The Walton Hotel on Dundas Street got a vg review here recently & the position is quite good. The Castlke View Guest House has frequently been recommended here & has a great position just off Princes St

A little further out are areas like Tollcross (where Gilmore Place is), Bruntsfield & Morningside which are all convenient. There's one in Tollcross which I've read really good things about here but can't remember the name - anyone ? Two Morningside B&Bs run by nice people I know slightly are One Albert Terrace (not the one in Musselburgh which is much further out) and Pringle's Ingle.

A bit further out again and to me slightly less fun areas but on good bus routes are these roads which have lots of B&Bs (each row is basically all the same road but with different names, in increasing order of distance out) -

1) Haymarket Terrace / West Coates / Roseburn Terrace / Corstorphine Road / St John's Road

2) South Clerk Street / (Newington Road / Minto Street / Mayfield Gardens / Craigmillar Park) or Dalkeith Road.

There are several cheap chain hotels in the centre - the Ibis (extremely central, practically on the Royal Mile), Premier Inns & Travel Lodges - which are are fine & I've stayed in them myself, but they are not 'charming' if that's what you are looking for.

Thanks so much, Caroline! I really appreciate all of those suggestions!

I'd prefer a B&B but would also like to be central. Since 50 pp is really more than I want to spend, we may have to go with the chain hotels. I don't at all mind that they're not charming. Inexpensive chain hotels are nearly always our lodging of choice here in the US. But I sure do like the warmth and interaction that you're more likely to find in a B&B in Ireland or the UK.

Unfortunately, I got an e-mail from Elder York today saying they're booked for our dates.

Assuming they still have the opening, I'm wondering whether we should just go with Adam Drysdale. The rate was good. And, since you say it's in an area with restaurants and pubs and on a bus line, we could do a lot worse.

Thanks again, Caroline!

Well, I just went ahead and booked Adam Drysdale. It's actually much less expensive than the Jury Inn. And I've decided there's something to be said for being out of the centre and seeing a little bit more of the city.

But mostly I just want to know we have a place to stay! Once all the reservations have been made and plane tickets bought (we, of course, already have the ones to get us from Chicago to Dublin and back!) we can relax and enjoy reading up on what we want to do once we're there!

Thanks again to all of you for your help. I'll post back to let you know how this decision turned out!

£60 per night for 2 is very good, especially so close to the centre.

Thanks, Caroline. I thought it was, but it's good to have it confirmed.
