Dear all,

My wife and I are making the trip to the UK in early June and would love to get your help on the hotels in Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are planning to stay two nights in Glasgow and 3 nights to Edinburgh, would like to stay in the city center next to all the attractions and are looking for a decent hotel less than $150, if possible.

Mount Royal in Edinburgh, right in the center of everything, on Princes Street....have stayed there twice, perfect location, don't know current prices.

Try www.visitscotland.com - there should be plenty of advice on where to stay and for how much.

$150 isn't much for any city center hotel in the UK let alone Edinburgh. (you couldn't do that in San Francisco or NY either BTW)

The Mount Royal is fine - but will be closer to $150 per person B&B even w/ a web special. $150 is only a bit over 75GBP - so you will likely do better w/ a B&B a bit farther out on a good bus line.

By bidding on Priceline, the original poster might be able to meet his budgetary targets in Glasgow and Edinburgh (and even by a significant margin perhaps), but a really central location would be unlikely in that instance. The city center zones in this case would not be that bad, though. (Definitely no other zones should be considered.)

For Edinburgh, there is at least one centrally located Premier Travel Inn, Travelodge, and Ibis. I recall the Ibis reviews are not great, but the location certainly is.

I stayed at the Kelvingrove Hotel in Glasgow for 45 pounds, as a single. It's not in the city center but is super close to places of interest in the West End (including the Kelvingrove Museum) and is a couple blocks away from a bus stop that will take you to the city center.

As an aside, how was your Glasgow trip, JoeTro? Would love to know what you ended up seeing - did you post a report??

JoeTro, please do at least a summary of the museums you saw and what you thought of them. I am always intrigued by your focus, and I visited many of those Glasgow museums last August. Plus, once you have shared a bit of a trip's planning with someone, you really are curious how it worked.

I have no idea about which hotels come up on PL in Edinburgh - but if you look at the PL website there are 3 zones. City Center covers will be the one you want - it is a bit mis-named since it does extend out to Leith. But basically it covers all of the Old town and the Georgian New town.

Edinburgh is an expensive city for accomodations. There are many decent budget places - but only a very few are in the center of the action. And the true budget hotels are fairly basic.

However, there is an <u>excellent</u> bus service that can get you anywhere from anywhere. So you might want to consider 1) B&amp;Bs, 2) Priceline, and/or 3) staying slightly outside of the center.

I stayed at AmarAgua Guest House in Edinburgh and thought it was very good. This was winter of 2004. I did have to take a bus into the city center, but it was easy and didn't take too long.

I got a reservation at the Jury's Hotel in Edinburgh for just under $150 a night, during early May. Doesn't look like a great Hotel, but centrally located.

I used to recommend the Ibis as people I know stayed there some years ago &amp; it was fine, &amp; others I've stayed in have been fine. It is in an excellent location, right next to the Royal Mile - but as another poster notes, it has had a few bad reviews lately. &pound;79prpn - http://www.ibishotel.com/ibis/ficheh...he_hotel.shtml.

There is a Travel Inn on Morrison Link which will be fine - it's just on the edge of the centre, so not quite such a great location but still good. I know Sheila has stayed there several times so it must be OK. Also &pound;79prpn, coincidentally (or not ?) - http://www.premiertravelinn.com/pti/...tiibsId=EDIMTI. The Lauriston Place branch is also quite central, is only about a year old &amp; is the same price - I'd say that's probably a slightly nicer location.

Or there's the Central youth hostel - only open since September, supposed to be nice &amp; all rooms from single to 8 bedders are en suite apparently.
