Need Help Budgeting for Northern Ireland Trip
Hello all,
I am going to be travelling in Ireland this June, and could really use some help in budgeting for food, transportation and hotels. I will be mostly staying in the North, as I am hoping to see for myself the places that I have been reading about.
As a student, my priority is affordability over amenities. I'm hoping to spend most of my time outside of my lodgings, anyhow. The two cities that I want to see are Derry and Belfast, with a larger part of my three weeks spent in the latter. Suggestions for other sites related to the Troubles are welcome.
If you could provide cost estimates for the average motel in Belfast or Derry, I would be much obliged. Also, cost estimates for an average meal (nothing fancy) would be quite useful to me. Lastly, any advice about transportation within Northern Ireland would be quite useful. I'll admit that this is my first time to anywhere in Europe, so I don't have much to base my sense of pricing on.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

To help you with yor meal budget, take a look at valuemenu.ie, eat in pubs, buy picnic stuff at the Petrol stations and if you stay in B&Bs, eat hearty at breakfast.
In Belfast, hostels will be the cheapest, the Linen House, http://www.belfasthostel.com/, would be my choice. In Derry, The Derry City Independent Hostel, http://www.derry-hostel.co.uk/, is one that I have heard good things about.
If Hostels are not your ideal situation, Parkview Lodge has an average rate of 35 GBP and is a very decent B&B at a budget price.
This site, http://www.travellerspoint.com/budge...dation-en.html, could be of considerable help to you in your planning.
Have a most excellent adventure!

Hi B,
I live in Belfast. Don't know the Hostel mentioned but looked it up and it is in an excellent location (The Cathederal Quarter). This area was a very run down area until a few years ago but there has been a lot of investment in the area and it is now an up and coming, trendy area - think Temple Bar in Dublin 15 years ago.
Buses are probably your best choice of transport but if you want to go to the North Coast the train to Portrush is considered to be a very scenic ride.

You will get the bus from Great Victoria Station which is within walking distant of the Hostel and the train from Central station, again within waling distance.
In Belfast Centre you will find a Tesco Metro and a Marks & Spencer where you will be able to pick up picnic food (IMO petrol stations tend to be a bit of a rip off).
Restaurants tent to be expensive but there are various Indian, Thai, Chinese, pubs that do very affordable food. A Main course would run about £7 or $14.
A pint of Guiness is about £2.40 or $5
Can't help with Derry but let me know if there is anything else that interests you and I will do my best to find out for you.
