Naples,Sorrento and Amalfi Coast
We leave for Italy in two weeks. Just received word from the travel agency that we will spend 2 nights in Naples instead of Sorrento. We are very interested in seeing the Amalfi coast and I can't tell by the map how close it is.What is doable on an afternoon? We are going to Capri as well.
Any advice?
Thanks very much, CSG

Is this a tour over which you have no control? If so, changing the location of the hotel shouldn't change the itinerary - except for your gettin up earlier for a faster start to the AC. (Naples to Sorrento is only about 30 minutres or so).
If it's not a tour how can anybody change hotels on you?

It sounds as if your tour company wasn't able to get rooms in Sorrento and decided to stay in Naples instead. You will probably ferry from Naples to Capri. Are you spending the night there or just a day trip?
The local commuter train (Circumvesuviana) from Naples to Sorrento takes 70 minutes and cost is about 4E one way. Pompeii is between the two. If you want to go there, get off at the Pompeii Scavi stop and the entrance is across the road.

It's hard to tell from your words, but is it a tour OR a travel agency setting up the trip for you personally.
While Naples is very interesting...Sorrento is more so and I would question why the change. Something sounds a little fishy. Capri is easier from Sorrento, as is Amalfi coast...though they CAN be done from Naples.(I hope it isn't a case of more money in the agency's pocket from what you were promised!)

CSG - The Amalfi Coast really deserves a whole day.
You could catch the morning direct hydrofoil (- dep. 09.55) from Napoli Beverello to Positano (- arr. 10.55):

You could then continue to Amalfi by ferry or bus - and perhaps take the bus up to Ravello.
From Amalfi you could continue to Salerno by ferry, and return from there to Naples by train.
You can find ferry/ bus/ train timetables on:

Hope this helps ...
