Tamtot, YOu do not have to stay at the hotel in Garmisch to go to the bar/music/Bavaian dance night. At least we did not stay there. I still am not sure of the name of the restaurant/bar, but am not sure it was part of a hotel, it did not seem so. Just ask where ever you stay in Garmisch and you can probably find this or something like it in Garmisch. Much fun place.

Hello friends!
I'm back in planning mode again. And, par for the course, we've had some changes.
My main question here is this. Now we are going to stay in Munich at the beginning of our trip
for a couple of days, just husband and I, then over to Vienna,
and then the next weekend we will be back in Munich for a three night stay with my son and his family.
We are passing on Salzburg this trip, since they have decided that's a trip they can do by themselves sometime,
but they don't see themselves hauling three kids under 5 to Munich anytime soon by themselves.
ANYWAY, we will land in Munich at 9 a.m. on a Saturday. We are staying for two nights at
Laimer Hof am Schloss Nymphenburg.
I just wonder our best way to get there from the Airport? Can I use the Bayern Ticket? Would that ticket
also work to get us to Dachau?
We will spend Saturday and Sunday in Munich, then head over to Vienna Monday morning.
What would you recommend we do for our time there, just the two of us? Obviously the weekend trip
with the grands will be less intense, and more kid-friendly sites.
Thanks so much for any tips or ideas!

Tamtot, Go out to Barnes and Noble and get yourself a Fodors or RickSteves book or etc on Germany or better on Munich. There is much to see and do. I know the train out to Dacchau is only about 20 to 30 minutes so cannot be that expensive. The books will give you good ideas of places of interest to you, and maps/transport, prices etc. This is essential. Almost all GErmans speak English so that is not a huge concern, only Americans still are a bit lazy about this issue. Have a great time, as I know you will.

Hi Friends!
We're back, and we are IN LOVE WITH EUROPE!
We had a great time, saw lots of new things, rode lots of busses and trains,
got some great love from our kids/grands, and really enjoyed
both Munich and Vienna! Got to see some Christmas markets,
attended a hockey game in Munich (one of our highlights!).
We are going back in the Spring, and planning to split our trip,
which I know isn't ideal, but will be that way as long as our
family lives there
Wondering where we should go Easter week? We will do 5 days in Vienna,
and then hubs and I will spend 5 days somewhere else.
We love scenery and historical stuff, not so much museum people.
London? Dublin? Amsterdam?
Where would you go for 4 days/5 nights?
Vienna, first, then we will fly our train to our second destination.
Thanks to every one of you who answered my questions.
Couldn't have done it without you.
Tammy

Hi tamtot!

Wow! So glad your trip went so well -- and a big welcome to this group of folks who so love travelling in and posting about Europe!

I don't have any real suggestions for your April 2019 trip right now, except maybe to note that, while you say you want to see scenery, you have listed only big cities in your few thoughts. So, maybe you want to think about staying in some small towns or villages instead of the cities.

I'm just really posting to suggest that you begin a new thread for your new trip. This thread has more than 100 posts on it, and people are not likely to read through all of them and then arrive at your new request. If you do decide to start a new thread, do include the information that you just had your first trip to Europe, to Munich and Vienna, and that your family lives there in Vienna.

Oh, and I would love to see a trip report from your trip! So many new travellers would love to read about how you planned, what went right, how you used the busses and trams, how the food was, and what little things might have gone wrong, etc.

Anyway, thanks so much for posting back and letting us know how your trip went!

tamtot, so happy to read that your trip went well!

I, too, would like to read your first-visit impressions. We have been living in Vienna so long now (6 years) that we only dropped in to see the Christmas tree lighting at the Wiener Christkindlmarkt (the big one), and do not visit the markets in Vienna any longer.

Please do start a new thread about your Spring trip. Easter week is in late April next year, but that doesn't mean much weather-wise. In April 2013 the last snow fell on the 23rd. In April 2017 snow fell in Vienna during that week, so we made a last-minute trip to the Istrian peninsula for warm sunshine and seafood.

Happy Planning!

Hi Tamtot, Athens here, glad you had agreat time, do the trip report as I am going to Vienna next 12/19 with son, been there before, but could use update. Also been to Amsterdam many times and London couple few times, not to Dublin. I think I'd suggest London, see th eTower of London, wtih the lovely Crowns in a dark room with spotlights on the jeweled crowns with a revolving floor, really awesome. Take in a play in London, had tickets once, bought in line at last minute in downpour of rain, saw Phantom of Opera for ablut $15. 6th row center/ Michael Crawford, awesome too. See Buckinghom Palace and Churchills War Room, so much to see, dbl decker buses to get the lay of the city. I love Amsterdam too, but was terribly crowed last time there, summer of 17. Looking forward to trip report on Vienna. Sue

Hi Athens Sue, and other friends,
Yes, in all fairness, I definitely owe you all a trip report.
I'll work on it this weekend and get it up.
We booked multi-city tickets today. Flying into London
and doing 5 days, and then 5 days in Vienna
I LOVE the idea of a show in London!!!!
Thank you ALL!!!!

Hi, There is a place to get discount theater tickets in London, others can tell you how to do it, been a few years since I did that. Maybe Picadilly Square? Do see Churchills War Room, a must. Herods Dept Store was interesting, maybe still owned by the Dodi Fayad family (spelling?). Had a little shrine in there last time I was in there. Looking forward to trip report esp on any updates on Vienna. Proably best to get show tickets ahead of time to be sure to get seats, my experience was a fluke, to get in when someone did not show up and get 6th row center seats for Phantom, at about $15. Was coming back from Africa and dead on my feet , slightly dirty, and standing in the rain. I think someone thought I needed it, and I did. awesome luck. there also is a nice little gift shop in the Tower of London, near the Crown Jewels room, looking forward to trip report. Sue Rain Rain go away, here in GA

Would also suggest that you watch The Crown on Netfix if you have not, as it is a good prep for a trip to London.

I agree with Swandav: research and hit some small towns... maybe do a few days in London on your way home.

The place for discount theater tickets in London is the TKTS booth in Leicester Square. Do NOT be tempted by the agencies you will pas on the way. If there is a show you want to be sure of seeing you could try the theater direct. See https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/ for what's on. My rainy day retreat in London is the V&A.
