Okay, so i'm a super planner, and would feel so much better if i have my train tickets purchased before I go.
I'm just a little confused about the difference in the trains from Germany to Salzburg.
So I'm looking at the seat61 site, and we are planning to book first class in the hopes that it will be a bit quieter,

so we can grab an extra hour of sleep.
Having said that, is there a certain car or train or seat we should choose?
Again, my apologies for so many questions. I'm sure I'm overthinking, but I really want to nail this down.
Thank you all!

Hi I would book first class on the trains, and try to get the fast trains that do not stop often, check time for travel to find these trains. Allow 4 hrs to get thru customs.

Hi again,

The Bavaria Ticket also has first class, so you can get that quiet and space you want.

I really would not stress about getting the ticket in advance. It is rather like a subway -- you buy the ticket, hop on, and grab a seat.

But you CAN buy them in advance, if you want. The only thing to watch out for is the day you will use -- Germans use the day-month-year format (3/9/2018 for 3 Sep) -- so be careful about that.

If you have a smart phone, download the DB app, and you can buy and store your tickets on it, and you can display your ticket to the conductor with it.

Not sure if this link will work, but if it does, you can buy your BT there.

Have fun!

This link worked, so thank you! So am I understanding correctly?
This ticket will get me from Munich airport to main station and then on to Salzburg?
Or would i need a different ticket from airport to main train station?
Thank you so much for your help!

Hi again,

Yes, the Bavaria Ticket is good throughout ALL of Bavaria and even to the Salzburg train station. It is NOT good for public transport within Salzburg (busses, trams, etc), so you would have to pay for that separately, or just take a taxi.

Use the German rail site (listed at reply #55 above) to get the exact schedules, and among the fares it will list will be the Bavaria Ticket (won't be named like that though). Make sure you enter the correct number of travellers, as that is what the fare is based on. When you get the ticket (if you go paper), you have to write the names of all the travellers on it. If you go mobile with the app, you don't have to do this step.

Have fun!

Ok, everyone. Moving right along!
Got our ticket from Munich to Salzburg on the Bavaria Ticket, so thanks for your help!

Now then.

We will be leaving Vienna and hubs and I will take a train Friday morning and spend Saturday and Sunday exploring
on our own before we leave first thing Monday morning.

The only thing we know for sure is that we want to spend time at Dacchau.
1 - If you were me, how would you organize your days? What are the most important things to see?
2 - Do you all have any fav hotels there in Munich that are central to the things I need to see?

Thank you again!

Hi again,

What is your budget for hotels? I stayed at the 3-star Blauer Bock near the Viktualienmarkt, and really liked it. A very popular 2-star is the Motel One, with several locations in Munich.

Also, what kinds of things are you interested in for touring? Countryside, Alps, landscape, and hiking? Or museums, attractions, architecture, churches, historical sights?

Have fun!

I would say our budget is around $150 per night.
We also have Hilton points we could use, but I’m sort of thinking I’d like to stay somewhere unique.

We aren’t hikers. I think historical spots and beautiful architecture is more our speed.

Thanks so much !

Hi again,

So, $150 is about 128€. I just did a couple of dummy bookings to look at the price -- I did it for 16-20 November just to get an idea of the rates.

The Blauer Bock has standard double rooms without breakfast going for 612€, or about 153€ per night, so it's a bit above your price preference.

Then I used booking.com (my go-to site for looking up and looking at hotels), and they show the Motel One hotels at just about $100 per night, going up or down a few dollars depending on location (note that those prices are in usd). The Hotel Ibis (again, several locations in Munich) also comes in at about $100 per night.

On booking.com, I also looked at the Blauer Bock, and they show rooms at $195 per night, including breakfast.

So I suggest that you peruse booking.com, see what's available. If any of the hotels looks good, contact the hotel and see if you can get a better price.

As for what to see in Munich, here's a website with ideas grouped by subject (castles, museums, churches, etc):

https://www.muenchen.de/int/en/sights.html

You may also want to visit a library to see some guide books and what they recommend.

Even though you aren't hikers, you may want to see the Zugspitze, Germahy's highest mountain. The train from Munich will take about 1h30 to get to Garmisch, then another 1h30 to get to the glacier on the Zugspitze. Then you take the Glacier cable car to the summit, then when you're ready to come down, take the Eibsee cable car all the way down to the Eibsee. You can then enjoy coffee & cake at the restaurant at the shore of the lake. Return to Garmisch on the Eibsee bus, walk through town, and then hop on a train back to Munich.

Have fun!

Garmisch, There is a really nice German bar/restaurant in Garmisch. They had the mountain soldiers in there with their pointed hat drinking and dancing when I was there.Don't recall the name of this big bar, but suspect it may still be there. Try to get the name of it, and try to go there if interested, good beer, good music and fun, not very rowdy. Sue

Yes, it's a very popular hotel and restaurant in Partenkirchen. They hold Bavaria Evenings with music and dancing.

I promise I will! We will have hopefully taken 2 trips there by then, as we're hoping to plan a Spring trip as well.

I'm so sorry for so many questions. I'm thinking perhaps we leave Vienna on Friday morning
and then go stay at this hotel. However, I'm not sure how to find Garmisch-Partenkirchen
on the train route. Is there a larger city it's near?
I promise, I'm trying!

Hi again,

Sorry I missed your questions earlier today --

Garmisch is about 1h30 south of Munich, and about 30 minutes north of Mittenwald. There are direct trains from Munich.

There are absolutely tons of hotels in Garmisch that look like that; in fact, most of the buildings on pedestrian zone in Partenkirchen and in Garmisch look like that. However, most of them don't have the Bavarian evenings for dancing and music.

That hotel is not super convenient for folks without a car, as it's not truly near a bus stop (maybe 5-10 minute walk to a bus stop) and then about a 20-minute bus ride to the train station for excursions. However, it's nicely located for walks and hikes up the Wank and the Eckbauer.

Anyway, here are some other hotels that look like the Frauendorfer:

ATLAS Grand Hotel - 4-Sterne-S-Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

https://www.hotel-schatten.de/en/

And this one is in Mittenwald, about 30 minutes farther on the train, again direct train from Munich:

Hotel Alpenrose, Mittenwald - rooms, horse-drawn rides, apartments, delicacies, Zunterer

BTW, Mittenwald is a small and charming village filled with those frescoed buildings (there are some in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but little Mittenwald is just filled with them). Mittenwald also has a wonderful violin-making museum, where you can learn about how to make violins and also learn how a man (Mathias Klotz) travelled over the Brenner Pass into Italy in 1685 to learn the violin-making trade, then travelled back to Mittenwald and taught his sons the trade. It's an amazing lesson about trade routes in the Middle Ages and the development of cottage industry. Well worthwhile.

The Museum

However, aside from that, activities in this area center on hiking and biking

Have fun as you continue to plan!

Garmisch used to have a US military hotel there with a bit lower rates for those affiliated with the military. Has it been closed down or might it still be there? Maybe these folks from Atlanta could us it, if some military? Also I suspect there might be several of these German music/dance type bars in GArmisch, always taxis.

Hi Sue 81,

Yes the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is still here, but they are now enforcing the rule that folks who don't live in Europe cannot stay there. It is now only for people who live/are stationed in Europe.
