I posted this question last year and have been waiting for the opening of the Musee Branly in order to view the collection of Orientalist paintings that were moved from the Musee des Arts d'Afrique et d'Oceanique. I can find no mention of this collection on the musuem's website or anywhere else. Has anyone been that can tell me if these paintings are being shown? Thanks!

I am going to try contacting the museum directly. We emailed them when they first opened but no one could give us that information at that time. They told us to contact them later when people that knew these things would be there. I will let you know.

Thanks St. Cirq. I had seen that info but no mention is made of the particular group of work that I seek. The musuem seems to be showing arts and creations of the people of North Africa--not by French and American painters who travelled there to paint the native people. Maybe I missed a mention in skimming over the site?

It specifically mentions four separate collections. And right now there's a special exhibit on North Africa that's highlighted on the home page of the web site.

Maybe someone who visted there can give us the answer. (if the whole collection is there.)

Under "Quatre collections exceptionnelles," there is a sectino, "La collection d'histoire," where it mentions (translatedà "orientalist paintings and sketches of explorere representing landscapes of North Africa and of sub-Saharian Africa..."

I don't know if this is the entire collection from the Musée des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie. There are orientalist works in the Louvre by Ingres, Delacroix and Chassérieau, as well as a number of works in the Musée des Années Trente at Boulogne-Billancourt.

I don't remember seeing these painters exhibited when I was there twice in April, and I went slowly and carefully through the museum.

I received a response from a curator at the Branly who agrees with Nancy--there are no Orientalists paintings hanging at the Branly. They are in storage and belong to "Collections Histoire". Too bad for us!
