Munich or Berlin?

While I've not been to Munich (so can't say much there), I just returned from my first trip to Berlin and found it absolutely fasinating! There is so much building going on in the eastern sector, yet surprisingly (to me) there were still lots of older buildings that have survived the Communist rule & WWII. The people were generally friendly and helpful, but there still seems to be somewhat of a holdover of the Soviet style of 'non assistance' with some of the older east Berliners. Which I found very interesting and very untouristy. The city is very large & spread out, but with a good U & S-bahn system getting around was easy.

I studied in Munich in '87, and have been back to Germany several times since. I LOVED Munich, especially over Berlin. (A hard call to make would be between Munich and Heidelberg). Munich is so much more beautiful, and the Bavarian people are so warm and friendly. Munich is also a good base to travel to many other countries -- it's close to the border. Both cities have a fun nightlife -- both can be hip and sophisticated; however, Berlin probably offers more clubs. I am sure you will be happy with whichever city you choose.

I lived in Munich a few years and traveled to Berlin. I love both places, but I think it depends on whether or not you are a real city person.

Munich is not a real city, it is a very charming and pretty town. Berlin is gritty and has an edge. No edge in Munich. Berlin has rich people, poor people, gay, brown and black people. Munich is pretty rich and pretty white bread. Berlin is an international city, Munich is quite provencial.

Munich is ideal for people who love the great outdoors because it is a small town and you can easily and quickly leave it to be surrounded by beautiful scenery (in fact, you are surrounded by beautiful mountains while *in* Munich!) Don't know much about what Berlin can offer that way. I am not a big club person, so can't comment on them, but I bet Berlin's night life is much hotter than Munich's.
In short, Munich is a great city if you don't like big cities. If you thrive in places like New York or London, you might prefer Berlin.

I live in Munich and what Francesca says is true. Berlin is a much bigger city with everything that goes with that. The coolest thing about Munich IMO is that the mountains are just 1 1/2 hours or so south of here, so if you like to hike or ski, it's perfect.
