Munich
Will be flying into Munich on Sept.24/02 & would like to get some idea of cab fare price to downtown Munich. Do some hotels offer shuttle service from the airport? Looking to stay a couple nights & do some sight seeing before renting a car to leave Munich. Have noticed several recommendations for Hotel Torbreau, looking for moderate, clean(not fansy) accommodations, any other suggestions? Appreciate any info.

Denis,

Take the S-Bahn from the airport. You want line 8. The S-Bahn is wonderful and very easy to navigate.

I stayed at the Hotel Torbreau a few weeks ago and highly recommend it. I don't know what your price range is like, but go to muenchen-tourist.de. It will provide a list of hotels and transportation details.

You will love Munich! The nice thing about the Torbreau is that it is right in the center of just about everything.

Let me know if I can be of more help.

Dick

By all means take the train from the airport into the Hauptbahnhof (main train station). Then take a cab.

Cheapest (12 DM) and at daytime fastest (40 min.) to get to the city center is by S8-Bahn. Trains leave every 20 min from 3.55 a.m. until 0.55 a.m. Look for the green S which leads you to the S-Bahn. Taxis are about 80-100 DM to the city.

An alternative to the S-Bahn, and what I think is an easier alternative, is to take the Lufthansa bus. The driver will radio ahead for a cab to meet the bus to take you to your hotel.
Our hotel was/is in Schwabing. We took the bus to the Nordfriedhof stop where a cab was waiting for us.
There was a minimal amount of luggage handling and the trip both in and back was easy.
Was in munich last year and a cab downtown from the airport would have been about $100USD one way. Took the S/U it was easy and very reasonable. For $70USD we (2 of us) could go anywhere within the 4 inner rings of the city for the entire 5 days we were there.

Just talk to the person near the S-bahn entrance in the airport, tell him where you are staying, what you want to see and how long you will be there, and he will set you up with whatever you need.

One word of warning though--If you have not gotten your hotel yet--good luck. I booked in April and had a very hard time finding a hotel room for less that $150USD then, you will probably find expensive rooms still available, but anything downtown and affordable will be tough.

We returned from Munich last Saturday.
Stayed at the Torbreau in one of their
"cheaper" rooms. The hotel was great
and includes a wonderful breakfast with
your room. Location is also excellent.
Four of us took a taxi from the hotel
to the airport and the cost was close
to 55 euro. We had an extra charge because of all our luggage. It was
definitely worth the cost. Munich is
a great place! We also visited some
of the smaller towns south of Munich.
If you would like more info, just e-mail me.

I felt kind of self conscious with a large heavy suitcase and a carry on, taking the train from the airport to downtown Munich. However, I found the train to be spacious enough and it was not a problem. From there I took a cab to my hotel, which was just $8-10 US.

When you get out of baggage claim, follow the signs to get to the trains....you'll be going past some shops. Just before the final escalator down to the train itself, there will be a desk on the left where the clerks sell you the train tickets, and can even help you make Eurail reservations as well!

Melissa,

Why did you have a "large heavy suitcase"? Everyone has posted on these boards to take nothing more than a 22" roller and a shoulder bag.

The proof is in the pudding. Would you do it again with the same luggage?

Shame

Shameonyou, I didn't say that I had a hard time with the suitcase--I was just self-conscious at first. Lots of people travel through Europe with large luggage. This was my 5th time there--the first 4 times, I brought a 22" rollabout and a tiny carry-on. This time, I brought a "large, heavy suitcase" to protect the items I was planning to bring back, knowing that a 22" rollabout was not going to cut it (from previous experience).

Shame on YOU!! I shouldn't have to justify my luggage choice if all I was doing was posting to help Denis.
