Trains in Munich

We are flying into Munich and will not have a car for a few days (when we leave Munich). How difficult is it to find the train and get to the center of the city? I believe our hotel is centerally located and we can walk to most places. We do want to get out to Dachau - can we take a train there?

So many last minute questions - this time next week, we'll be there!

Thanks!

The two suburban lines S-1 and S-8 both leave from the sma etation at the airport..easily to find.

For dachau, you can take a combination of S-bahn and local bus from the Dachau S-Bahn statio to the site itself

Go here for U-Bahn/S-Bahn map

Just follow the signs to the train at the airport. You will not have a problem. Depending on the location of your hotel, get off at the S-Bahn station that is suggested by your hotel.

Take the S train to Dachau. Then at the Dachau station, walk out and you will see the bus stops. Check the posted signs for the bus that will take you to the camp. It's really easy.

Public transportation in Munich is great - goes lots of places, runs often, great signage.

From the airport, you can take either the S1 or the S8 as both go to the city center.

Hi sc,

Have you asked your hotel for directions?

That Toytown map is an old one from MVV (Munich metro) and is difficult to use. MVV has a newer one in .pdf format at http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/web4archi...nnetz_2009.pdf.

I've been here. I only post when I feel I have something to contribute.

Snowcraig: getting to Dachau from downtown is easy. Take the S2 (direction Petershausen) 21 minutes to the Dachau Bahnhof. At Dachau Bahnhof you'll have about 10 minutes to catch the #726 bus (direction Dachau, Saubachsiedlung, 7 minutes) to the Memorial (called KZ-Gedenkstätte).

Two websites with which you should get familiar.

German Rail schedules and fares: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Munich metro: www.mvv-muenchen.de

The German Rail link takes you to a website in English. The Munich metro site can be changed to English with a click on the British flag.

For two (we) people (up to 5) coming into town from the airport, purchase an MVV Gesamtnetz Partner Tageskarte for €18. That will cover both of you for your travel from the airport to downtown with the S-Bahn, plus any other MVV transit you want to use the rest of the day.

If you go to Dachau on a different day, get an MVV XXL Partner Tageskarte for €11,80. That will cover both the S-Bahn to Dachau Bahnhof and the #726 bus to the memorial, and return, and any other travel in the inner two zones of Munich the rest of the day.
